About The Position

The Office of the University Counsel (OUC) at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks applications for an FOIA/eDiscovery Paralegal for the 2026-27 Academic Year. This is a part-time wage position that will work 24 hours each week with the OUC assisting the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Officer/eDiscovery Manager and supporting OUC litigation attorneys. OUC represents UVA in all legal and regulatory matters and provides advice and counsel to the Board of Visitors, the President, executive officers, and other administrators, faculty, and staff in their official capacities for both the Academic Division and the Medical Center. UVA’s FOIA Office operates under the auspices of the OUC and is responsible for receiving and responding to public records requests made to UVA under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, as well as working with the OUC on subpoena responses, document preservation notices and holds, and eDiscovery management. As FOIA/eDiscovery Paralegal, the successful candidate will support the FOIA Officer/eDiscovery Manager with reviewing and responding to FOIA requests and subpoenas in a timely manner.

  • Graduate of a four-year institution of higher education, and experience working in an administrative support role in a business office, law firm or law department, or at an institution of higher education, or other relevant role, is required

Responsibilities

  • Assist with FOIA requests and subpoenas
  • Maintain and update OUC FOIA/eDiscovery logs and OUC FOIA/eDiscovery share drives
  • Communicate and follow-up with custodians of records sought
  • Assist with drafting responses to FOIA and eDiscovery requests and subpoenas
  • Assist with monitoring FOIA and eDiscovery response deadlines
  • Draft Preservation Notices related to actual and anticipated litigation
  • Support OUC lawyers and other office personnel with a full range of legal assistant duties (e.g., answering the phone, word-processing, proofreading, copying, scheduling meetings, preparing documents)
  • Prepare litigation notebooks and exhibits
  • Maintain and organize cases and file management
  • File legal documents with courts, as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
