About The Position

The Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI) is seeking a mission-driven professional to join our team as a FOIA Coordinator. In this role, you will support DOLI’s responsibilities under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). This position is a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful work that supports transparency, accountability, and workplace safety across the Commonwealth. As a FOIA Coordinator, you will serve as the agency’s primary designated point of contact responsible for managing DOLI’s compliance with FOIA.

Requirements

  • Experience interpreting and applying legal guidelines and regulations
  • Experience handling complex administrative tasks, records management, or legal compliance
  • Experience using software to identify and redact sensitive information
  • Exceptional writing skills required to draft precise legal response letters and explain policy to the public

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of specific laws and relevant exemptions pertaining to Virginia Freedom of Information Act
  • Paralegal certification or training is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Interpret laws and apply complex exemptions to various record types.
  • Process and track FOIA requests received by DOLI.
  • Prepare timely, accurate, and legally compliant responses to requests.
  • Assist with records searches and reviews, including redacting agency records in compliance with FOIA, VOSH laws and administrative regulations, and agency policies.
  • Handle multiple complex requests independently while meeting strict legal deadlines.
  • Communicate regularly with external stakeholders – including attorneys, government officials, and the public.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and privileged agency information.
