About The Position

The Float School Nurse RN is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to students, minimizing absence due to illness, and promoting a healthy school environment. This role involves strengthening the educational process by addressing health-related barriers to learning and providing optimal well-being experiences. The nurse will also provide direction to licensed practical nurses and support school nursing departments by floating to different schools as needed for short or long-term assignments. The position focuses on delivering quality medical and health educational experiences, managing fiscal responsibilities efficiently, and ensuring patient safety and satisfaction.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing with an Associate in Nursing Degree.
  • BLS required.
  • Computer skills required.
  • Current licensure by the Indiana State Board of Nurses’ Registration and Nursing Education as an active Registered Nurse.

Nice To Haves

  • Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing Degree (BSN) preferred or required with 5 years of hire date.
  • Minimum of two years' experience in health field relating to school age children and/or previous experience in school nursing preferred.
  • Area specific required education may be obtained upon hire and is to be maintained.

Responsibilities

  • Provide quality triage, treatment, or first aid for students who are ill or injured.
  • Interpret, implement, and document quality measures per Indiana State Board of Health specific standards.
  • Create Individualized Healthcare Plans when student health warrants.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication with students, school staff, and parents.
  • Practice safety measures in accordance with universal precautions, including fall prevention and proper body mechanics.
  • Practice safe medication administration and maintain accurate records.
  • Maintain knowledge of current pharmacology.
  • Provide student and parent education when indicated, and ensure mandated immunizations/testing are complete and documented annually.
  • Disseminate information and training specific to student health to school personnel.
  • Implement established protocols as approved by the medical director.
  • Maintain competency by subbing on a routine basis.
  • Demonstrate leadership and exemplary behavior as an adult role model and resource for school staff.
  • Participate in professional development activities.
  • Meet identified customer service standards and understand HRH’s nursing mission, vision, values, and philosophy.
  • Exhibit excellent guest relations and promote collegial relationships with school personnel.
  • Provide holistic, competent care to students of all age groups and diverse populations.
  • Foster relationships with future healthcare students and education programs.
  • Perform clinical procedures under the scope of license with MD order or protocol.
  • Support school nursing departments by floating to different schools or events for either short- or long-term need.
