The Float Pool Registered Nurse provides nursing care within the nurse’s scope of practice across PCU, Telemetry, Medical-Surgical, and Emergency Department Holding units. The predominant assignment is ED Holding, where travelers can expect to spend most of their contract time, although it is not the home unit. Nurses may also be asked to float to a nearby facility approximately 2.5 miles away, with prior notification, to provide care within the same scope of practice. Patient populations include neuro, trauma and surgical, medical, respiratory-compromise, sepsis, renal failure, CHF, COPD, pneumonia, orthopedic, stroke, cardiac stepdown, and postoperative cases including CABG/TAVR, STEMI, pacemaker insertion, and catheterization. Ratios are 1:4 in PCU and 1:5–6 in Medical-Surgical. The position includes weekend rotation, typically every other weekend, with occasional back-to-back weekends. No on-call duty is required. Shifts are 0700–1930 or 1900–0730; schedules are issued in three-week increments 7–10 days before the schedule begins. Self-scheduling and guaranteed patterned shifts are not available. Travelers may request up to five days off. The department has CNAs, a charge RN without a patient assignment, and hospitalists and respiratory technicians available 24/7; cardiac and specialty physicians are on call 24/7. Orientation includes one day of general hospital orientation and one 12-hour PCU unit-orientation day. Telemetry competency is required for all travelers. Scrubs may be any solid, professional color. Free parking is available in the parking garage. Documentation practices include filling out whiteboards, hourly rounding, and bedside reports.
