Float Nurse (LPN/RN)

BHG Careers•Providence, RI

About The Position

Behavioral Health Group (BHG) is seeking a Medication Float Nurse (LPN or RN) to provide nursing coverage across four treatment centers in Rhode Island. Rather than working at a single location, the nurse travels between assigned centers in close geographic proximity to support changing staffing and operational needs. Assignments may last from a few days to several weeks and may cover scheduled time off, leaves of absence, vacancies, or emergencies. The role provides direct patient care and medication administration, including methadone and other prescribed medications, while supporting continuity of care and safe treatment center operations. The nurse works with Program Directors, Nursing Supervisors, counselors, and other nurses, and may assist with orientation and training of nursing team members. Regular travel between designated centers is required, and specific assignments and locations may change based on operational needs.

Requirements

  • Active, unrestricted Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state or states where assigned.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly between assigned treatment centers within a designated geographic area.
  • Flexibility to work at different locations based on changing staffing and operational needs.
  • Strong clinical judgment and organizational skills, with a commitment to patient safety.
  • Ability to adapt to different treatment centers, teams, and workflows; work independently; manage competing priorities; and make sound clinical decisions.
  • Ability to collaborate and build positive working relationships with nursing teams, counselors, and treatment center leadership.
  • Compassionate, respectful, patient-focused approach to treating people with substance use disorders with dignity.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous nursing experience in substance use disorder treatment, behavioral health, or medication-assisted treatment (MAT).
  • Familiarity with medication administration, patient assessments, and clinical documentation.
  • Experience working independently and adapting to different clinical environments.

Responsibilities

  • Travel between assigned treatment centers to cover planned and unplanned staffing needs, including scheduled PTO, leaves of absence, unexpected vacancies, and emergencies.
  • Administer methadone and other prescribed medications according to physician orders, established protocols, and applicable regulations.
  • Conduct nursing assessments, evaluate patients for appropriate dosing and treatment needs, monitor responses, and communicate relevant concerns to the treatment team.
  • Maintain accurate dosing documentation and daily medication inventory reconciliation, and comply with medication storage, handling, and reporting requirements.
  • Collect urine specimens, maintain patient records, monitor required laboratory work and clinical documentation, and assist with medication shipments and inventory.
  • Collaborate with Program Directors, Nursing Supervisors, counselors, and fellow nurses to maintain consistent, high-quality patient care.
  • Follow clinical, regulatory, and safety standards and identify opportunities to improve patient care and treatment center operations.
  • Assist with orientation, training, and ongoing support of nursing team members as needed.
