About The Position

The Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) organization is seeking a highly-motivated and energetic Flight Engineering Manager to join the Vertical Lift Division located in Ridley Park, PA. This position will lead the Flying Qualities & Autonomy team in Ridley Park, PA and support the Vertical Lift Flight Technology team. This organization is responsible for all functionally aligned Statement of Work and assuring technical integrity on all Vertical Lift Division programs, including the CH-47 Chinook, V-22 Osprey, MH-139 Grey Wolf, AH-64 Apache, H-6 Little Bird, as well as Phantom Works Vertical Lift activities. The selected manager, working with the senior manager, will manage and oversee a team of engineers supporting development (analysis and design) activities in the areas of Flying Qualities, Stability and Control, and Flight Controls including control laws and aeroservoelastic analysis, flight simulations (desktop and piloted), wind tunnel and flight testing. The candidate must also provide technical leadership, participating at a detailed technical level in the development of solutions for the most complex handling qualities and flight control tasks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree or higher in a relevant field of Engineering (Mechanical/Aerospace)
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in rotorcraft flying qualities or rotorcraft flight controls is required.
  • External candidates must have at least one year of experience in a leadership role (team leader, temp manager, large scale cross functional project/program management, or formal manager experience).
  • Internal candidates must have at least one year of experience in a leadership role (team leader, temp manager, large scale cross functional project/program management, or formal manager experience) OR have completed the Boeing internal course “Exploring Leadership”.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • A Final Secret Post start is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of rotorcraft stability & control and handling qualities.
  • Knowledge of rotorcraft control laws requirements, design, analysis and testing.
  • Knowledge of flight simulation modeling and tool development.
  • Knowledge of developing and maintaining flight simulation and integration laboratories.
  • Knowledge of wind tunnel and flight testing of rotorcraft.
  • In depth knowledge of capabilities, practices and resources of US DoD engineering organizations such as NAVAIR, SRD and TDD.
  • Experience leading engineering teams.
  • Experience leading teams who are distributed across multiple locations.
  • Knowledge of program management best practices; Knowledge of estimating and management tools including earned value reporting systems and risk management; Knowledge of proposal preparation processes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Flying Qualities team, performing engineering and technical activities in the areas of rotorcraft Flying Qualities, Stability and Control, and Flight Controls design, wind tunnel and flight testing.
  • Develop and execute integrated departmental plans, policies and procedures and provide input on departmental business and technical strategies, goals, objectives.
  • Acquire resources for department activities, provides technical management of suppliers and leads process improvements.
  • Develop and maintain relationships and partnerships with customers, stakeholders, peers, partners and direct reports.
  • Provide oversight and approval of technical approaches, products and processes.
  • Manage, develop and motivate employees.
