About The Position

Perform a variety of tasks that vary in complexity and difficulty based on type of vehicle/equipment such as automotive, light/medium/heavy duty diesel trucks, Fire apparatuses, heavy construction equipment such as cranes, dozers, excavators, loaders, pavers, rollers and farm/agricultural equipment as well as small equipment like motorcycles, ATV/UTV, boats, power generation and electrical golf carts, light/messaging equipment. Jobs, such as maintenance inspections and light repairs involve minor adjustments, testing, measuring and/or replacement of parts and components. Major repairs involve recondition and replace parts such as axles, pistons, bearing, gears, seals, valves, bushings and pumps using engine lathes, press machines, various tools and precision measuring instruments, replacement may require disassembly and/or reassembly of the engine, transmission, differential or hydraulic components. Must be able to work during weather related emergencies and available to stay at one location for an undetermined amount of time. Attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position.

Requirements

  • Completion of formal training in a postsecondary institution/training program or ten years of fleet experience.
  • Two current Master ASE in Automotive, Medium/Heavy Truck or Transit or EVT and seven years of experience.
  • Certification from MACS Mobile Air Conditioning Society in Freon installation, automotive air conditioning and emissions (including ASE 609, Refrigerant recycling and service procedures).
  • Class B CDL State of Texas (Must be obtained within twelve months of employment or attainment of position as a condition of continued employment with Fleet Services).
  • Safety and Emissions Certification from State of Texas (Must be obtained within six months of employment or attainment of position as a condition of continued employment with Fleet Services).
  • Proper tire repair procedures specifically related to pursuit vehicles.
  • Basic knowledge of workplace health and safety practices.
  • Basic theories, practices, tools, parts, diagnostic equipment and materials necessary for the effective maintenance and repair of fleet units.
  • Extensive knowledge of computer controls and growing number of electronic systems and sensors.
  • Knowledge of varied types of generators including diesel and propane powered systems nomenclature, preventive and corrective maintenance approaches, as well as safety procedures relating to lock-out, tag-out and high voltage generation.
  • Propulsion precautions, design and layout of welding and fabrication to ensure high levels of quality and integrity in fleet maintenance and repair.
  • Safe handling of chemicals associated with fleet repair, parts and various systems (fuel, brake, cooling systems, etc.) cleaning solvents and lubricants.
  • Safety practices and regulations for operating mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Highly skilled in use of computerized tuning/diagnostics.
  • Moderate skills in use of desktop/personal computer systems.
  • Read and interpret manufacturer schematics and vendor diagrams, manuals and specifications to complete installation and repair of complex fleet and heavy equipment related parts and systems.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance inspections and light repairs involving minor adjustments, testing, measuring and/or replacement of parts and components.
  • Perform major repairs involving reconditioning and replacing parts such as axles, pistons, bearings, gears, seals, valves, bushings and pumps using engine lathes, press machines, various tools and precision measuring instruments.
  • Disassemble and/or reassemble engine, transmission, differential or hydraulic components.
  • Work during weather related emergencies and be available to stay at one location for an undetermined amount of time.
  • Ensure safe and effective handling of toxic substances to ensure environmental compliance.
  • Ensure safe operating techniques and the occupational hazards of motorized, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment operation, as well as electrically energized automotive tools, components and servicing equipment.
  • Diagnose malfunctions through the utilization of advanced electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment of varied types and manufacturers.
  • Repair malfunctions of fleet equipment and systems, including engine and drive systems, fuel, electrical, cooling, suspension, chassis and safety appliances, refrigerant recovery and recycling requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Use and maintain automotive tools and equipment utilized in automotive and heavy equipment maintenance and diagnostics.
  • Use strategies to diagnose the source and the extent of the problem.
  • Account for misalignments or other errors when inspecting or repairing engines and/or components.
  • Talk to customers about automotive/equipment problems and work that they have planned, started, or completed.
  • Connect or attach components or use hand tools.
