About The Position

The Denver Police Department is looking for a highly skilled and detail-oriented Fleet Technician to support the maintenance, repair, and operational readiness of a diverse fleet of light- and heavy-duty vehicles and specialized equipment. In this role, you will perform routine and annual inspections, preventive maintenance, and complex diagnostics across gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel systems. You’ll be responsible for documenting repairs, coordinating with manufacturers on complex issues, and ensuring compliance with safety and emissions standards, including Colorado state testing. This position also involves advanced mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and HVAC system repairs, as well as fabrication and welding for custom solutions. The ideal candidate is comfortable collaborating with team members, supporting law enforcement equipment needs, and delivering excellent customer service through clear communication and reliable, high-quality work.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate
  • Four (4) years of experience in the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of gasoline, diesel, or alternate fuel powered equipment, including electronic systems, hydraulic systems, transmission and combustion engine overhaul
  • By position, requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application
  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain accurate documentation, records, and reports
  • Complete detailed inspection reports identifying vehicle damage, required repairs, and maintenance needs
  • Follow and enforce all shop safety standards and procedures and assist the body shop by assessing vehicle damage and estimating repairs
  • Diagnose and repair gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel engines for light- and heavy-duty equipment using standard and specialized diagnostic tools
  • Diagnose and repair vehicle emission systems and perform Colorado state emissions testing
  • Perform major engine overhauls and diagnose, repair, rebuild, and adjust engine and powertrain control systems
  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain automatic, manual, and hydrostatic transmissions, including related components such as PTO units, clutches, drivelines, differentials, and final drives
  • Troubleshoot and repair complex electronic and electrical systems, including onboard computers, fuel systems, batteries, alternators, starters, relays, solenoids, regulators, and wiring harnesses
  • Repair and maintain HVAC and engine cooling systems, including radiators, water pumps, hoses, and related components
  • Diagnose, repair, and rebuild complete hydraulic systems, including cylinders, pumps, motors, valves, and lines
  • Diagnose, reprogram, and repair braking systems, traction control systems, and restraint systems (airbags and advanced safety systems)
