About The Position

The purpose of this classification is to perform manual work functions associated with routine repair, service, and maintenance of motor vehicles and/or construction equipment. Essential Functions The following duties are normal for this classification. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Specific duties listed may not be required for all positions within this classification but are determined by the normal requirements for the particular position.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Two (2) years of work experience in fleet services preferred.
  • Must obtain and maintain an Alabama Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B, within twelve (12) months of employment.
  • This job classification is considered to be safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment and random drug screens.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects and services motor vehicles and/or construction equipment; examine parts for damage or excessive wear; perform repairs or adjustments; refers complex repairs to appropriate personnel.
  • Responsible for performing safety checks at the start of each shift on functionality on all equipment and/or vehicles needed for daily job duties.
  • Performs tire repairs on small, medium, and heavy equipment and/or vehicles to include patching, plugging, replacing, mounting, and balancing tires.
  • Performs inspections on brakes and rotors with knowledge of when to replace them.
  • Performs inspections for alignments.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on small, medium, and heavy equipment and/or vehicles: checking, changing, and adding fluids and filters. Includes coolant, hydraulic fluid, transmission fluid, diesel exhaust fluid, and windshield wiper fluid. Check and replace all filters as needed.
  • Inspect batteries, alternators, and starters using high voltage tools.
  • Repair all headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, strobe lights, and any bulb replacements.
  • Responsible for checking the City’s lift stations and fueling as needed.
  • Responsible for checking fuel levels and refueling various City facilities. Includes any equipment and vehicles in the field.
  • Performs routine maintenance, safety, and environmental checks on fuel islands, to include monthly inspections, checking filters, and replacing filters on a routine basis
  • Checks and monitors the fuel readings and levels at the fuel island.
  • Assist in transporting vehicles to and from various vendor locations.
  • Test drives vehicles before and after repair.
  • Assist mechanics with repairs when applicable.
  • Receives, completes, and forwards work orders using a computer operating program
  • Responsible for a 20-point new vehicle onboarding inspection checklist.
  • Responsible for motor pool inspection checklist.
  • Applies City of Tuscaloosa decals onto vehicles/equipment.
  • Installs automatic vehicle location devices.
  • Responsible for surplus process (removing City of Tuscaloosa decals, removing automatic tracking location devices, and removing any other City property before vehicle/equipment is retired).
  • Must respond to call outs and after hours calls when designated.
  • Performs cleaning/housekeeping tasks associated with maintaining shop areas.
  • Must accomplish the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, in a timely manner.
  • Incorporates continuous quality improvement principles in day-to-day activities.
  • Recommends policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of quality services by the Department.
  • Must meet regular attendance requirements.
  • Must be able to maintain good interpersonal relationships with staff, co-workers and managers.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
