About The Position

The Fleet Mechanic will be responsible for planning, organizing, and performing maintenance, service, repair, and inspections on all company fleet and other equipment so that vehicles and equipment will be kept safe and operating properly in order to minimize problems and interruptions to the delivery process. Use power and hand tools, analysis, testing and measuring devices to diagnose problems and determine repairs needed per federal, state, and local agency requirements. Work will be performed primarily outside either on company site, in the field at jobsites or on public roadways.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree in Automotive Technology or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or related experience is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years of experience as a mechanic performing repair and maintenance on heavy trucks and diesel engine vehicles, forklifts, equipment and related components is preferred.
  • Have, or ability to obtain a CDL license within one year of employment, for roadside assistance help and to test drive equipment as necessary is preferred.
  • Welding skills are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Performs the maintenance, service and related repairs of fleet vehicles, to include light/medium/heavy trucks, trailers forklifts and other equipment (electric, gas, diesel, propane), ensuring meets safety and performance requirements.
  • Conducts routine diagnostic analyses to check and test vehicle parts, systems and equipment using standard diagnostic and testing instruments; and make necessary repairs, adjustments or replacements in a timely manner.
  • Perform all repairs, replacement, or adjustment of vehicle and equipment systems to include, but not limited to, changing oil, filters, spark plugs, and fluids; lubricating; replaces filters, lights, hoses and belts; checking systems for proper adjustment; brake overhauls; clutch adjustments; basic engine and transmission repairs; failure analysis; general overhaul and major tune-ups; trailer and forklift repairs; and more.
  • Track & perform all scheduled preventative maintenance and inspections for all vehicles and equipment, following vehicle/equipment manuals and DOT requirements.
  • Maintain records of maintenance and repairs detailing work performed such as service activities, requisitions parts, supplies, tools, and materials including warranty work.
  • Repairs under $1k can be approved by the Fleet Mechanic; repairs over $1k will require a quote from the vendor and approval from the location Division Manager.
  • Operates automotive vehicles and equipment to observe, check and assess malfunctions and repairs, conduct test runs, or otherwise transport vehicles and equipment for service or outside repair.
  • Recommends when serious or unusual repairs need to be outsourced.
  • Road tests vehicles and trucks upon completion of repairs to ensure proper functioning and safe operating conditions.
  • Coordinate with Division/Operations/Delivery Managers and review Pre-Trip truck inspections to prioritize work accordingly
  • Communicate with the Division Managers and Operations Managers to help ensure preventative vehicle maintenance policies and practices are being followed and relay any issues.
  • Order parts from approved vendors and drive company pick up/repair truck to pick up parts when needed.
  • Provide emergency road call service by performing roadside repairs and adjustments.
  • Log travel miles and work performed for each division.
  • Perform welding and fabrication for vehicle and equipment repairs and systems modifications. Inspect for cracks or damages on all vehicles and fabricate parts as needed.
  • Read and interpret schematics and technical drawings, shop manuals and repair guides for mechanical specifications, and instructions on how to adjust and/or repair vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform routine housekeeping duties to ensure working location, equipment and tools are in order.
  • Ensure the professional appearance of all company vehicles and equipment.
  • Understand and remain current with industry standards and regulations. Ensure compliance with all State and Federal trucking regulations.
  • Communicate with the Division Managers in determining needs for equipment and supplies.
  • Must be able to work overtime when needed. Nights and weekends may be needed if emergency situations would arise.
  • Understands and follows all Company policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
