About The Position

This position is for a Union NYSEG Fleet Mechanic 1/C located in Liberty, NY. The role involves inspecting, repairing, adjusting, and maintaining a variety of transportation and construction units and equipment. The mechanic will perform motor and electrical work, including engine and fuel system repairs, suspension and brake system maintenance, and hydraulic equipment servicing. Responsibilities also include operating specialized equipment like lathes and welding apparatus, directing the work of others, and acquiring skills for advancement. Clerical duties such as preparing time sheets and records are also part of the role. The position requires obtaining necessary licenses and certifications to drive and inspect company equipment, including potential certification for motor vehicle and crane equipment repair if mandated by New York State.

Requirements

  • Must pass a test of basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical principles applying to automotive and construction equipment.
  • Must demonstrate ability to handle tools.
  • Must be a high school graduate or have obtained an equivalency diploma recognized by the State of New York.
  • Must be familiar with Company's Safety Rules, approved methods of resuscitation and be able to render practical First Aid.
  • Must obtain required licenses to drive and inspect Company equipment.
  • Normal health, physique and use of senses as indicated by passing the required physical examination given by a Company physician, including color perception.
  • Strength and endurance adequate for arduous labor in all kinds of outdoor weather conditions.
  • Possess temperament suited to jobs where manual dexterity, precision and patience are particularly essential.
  • Must be willing to work extra and/or irregular hours and/or a shift schedule.
  • Must be willing to work under unusual or special working conditions and surroundings, as well as the normal working conditions pertaining to this job.
  • Must be particularly alert in observing hazards and avoiding accidents.
  • Must possess keen faculties of observation.
  • Must meet general requirements for all employees as described in the Preamble to Job Specifications.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous mechanical experience preferred.
  • Should have had a year's experience as a Laborer in the Transportation Department.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects, repairs, adjusts and maintains all types of transportation and construction units and equipment.
  • Performs motor and electrical work, including adjusting timing, ignition systems, carburetors, and fuel systems.
  • Inspects, repairs, and installs suspension, body components, axles, running gear assemblies, wheels, brakes, and steering assemblies.
  • Maintains radiators, transmissions, differentials, and engine accessories such as generators, alternators, starters, coils, and filters.
  • Clears up trouble on units on the road or in the field.
  • Road tests vehicles.
  • Inspects, repairs, overhauls, adjusts, and maintains all types of transmissions.
  • Performs work on hydraulic equipment, including valves, controls, cylinders, motors, pumps, and pressure adjustments.
  • Operates a lathe and builds bodies or compartments.
  • Operates acetylene and electric welding equipment for cutting, heating, burning, welding, and brazing.
  • Directs the work of others and assists them.
  • Acquires necessary knowledge and skills for advancement to a fully qualified Mechanic-First Class.
  • Performs other related or less skilled work as directed, including preparing time sheets, running records, and gasoline and oil records.
  • Obtains required licenses or certifications to drive and inspect Company equipment.
  • May be certified to repair motor vehicles and crane equipment if mandated by New York State.
