FLEET MANAGER
About The Position
The Fleet Manager will lead Fleet Operations, overseeing daily operations to ensure vehicles and equipment are safe, reliable, and available. This role involves managing the vehicle lifecycle, directing maintenance, and inventory. The manager will also drive performance and efficiency by developing KPIs, identifying process improvements, and implementing new technologies. People and resource management includes providing leadership, supervision, hiring, training, and performance management for the Fleet Department staff, fostering a culture of safety and continuous improvement. Financial and contract management involves developing budgets, managing expenditures, monitoring contractor performance, and negotiating vendor contracts. Ensuring safety and compliance with regulatory requirements like OSHA and EPA is crucial, as is leading safety and training programs. Collaboration and communication involve partnering with internal departments, addressing customer concerns, and presenting operational reports to leadership.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Engineering, Accounting, or a related field, plus at least 5 years of progressive experience managing complex operations and at least 3 years of supervisory/management experience
- OR Associate degree or technical certification in automotive/mechanical technology (or related field), plus at least 9 years of relevant progressive experience, including supervisory responsibilities
- Strong knowledge of fleet maintenance, automotive repair, and equipment management
- Experience with budgeting, procurement, and contract management
- Ability to analyze performance data and implement strategic improvements
- Proven leadership and team management skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
- Valid North Carolina Driver’s License
Nice To Haves
- Certified Automotive Fleet Manager (CAFM) or Certified Public Fleet Professional (CPFP) preferred or required based on experience level
Responsibilities
- Oversee daily fleet operations, ensuring vehicles and equipment are safe, reliable, and available to meet operational needs
- Manage vehicle lifecycle activities, including acquisition, commissioning, maintenance, and replacement
- Direct fleet maintenance, parts inventory management, and welding services
- Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to improve shop efficiency, resource utilization, and cost effectiveness
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and implement innovative solutions
- Evaluate and implement new technologies to enhance fleet operations
- Provide leadership and supervision to Fleet Department staff, including hiring, training, performance management, and development
- Build a strong team culture focused on safety, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Lead workforce planning and succession efforts
- Develop and manage departmental budgets, capital plans, and operational expenditures
- Monitor contractor performance and ensure compliance with contractual and financial requirements
- Review, negotiate, and manage vendor contracts
- Enforce safety standards and ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and other regulatory requirements
- Lead safety and training programs to maintain a safe and compliant work environment
- Partner with internal departments to understand fleet needs and deliver exceptional service
- Respond to customer concerns and provide timely, effective solutions
- Prepare and present operational reports, metrics, and recommendations to leadership
