About The Position

The City of Ventura is seeking a motivated Fleet & Equipment Technician to join our Public Works Department. Under general supervision, this position performs a full range of skilled mechanical work, including the repair, maintenance, installation, and servicing of automotive, emergency, and construction equipment maintained by the City’s Fleet facility. The incumbent may be required to participate in a rotational stand-by schedule and respond to callback assignments as needed within a designated timeframe. Stand-by assignments are at the discretion of the Division Head.

Requirements

  • A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to the completion of high school, supplemented by course work in auto, truck, and/or construction mechanics, and two years of recent experience performing preventive maintenance and routine repairs on motor vehicles or heavy equipment (for Technician I).
  • A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to the completion of high school, supplemented by course work in auto, truck, and/or construction mechanics; and three years recent experience as a mechanic in automotive and heavy equipment repair are required (one year experience performing duties comparable to those of Fleet & Equipment Technician I with the City of Ventura plus two years additional experience) (for Technician II).
  • Employees must be able to provide a complete set of basic automotive tools.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license and an acceptable driving record are required.
  • Within six months of employment, the incumbent must obtain and maintain a California Class A driver’s license with tanker endorsement.
  • Drug testing is required in accordance with Department of Transportation regulations.
  • Depending on assignment, a California Emission Tester Certification may be required.
  • Required within six months of employment: OSHA Forklift Operator certification and OSHA Compliance Fleet Tire Service certification.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains motor vehicles and heavy equipment in safe and proper working condition by performing inspections, preventive and corrective maintenance, and electronic diagnostics on engines, brakes, steering, transmissions, suspension, hydraulics, electrical systems, and related components.
  • Performs industry inspections including BIT, emissions, and safety checks.
  • Diagnoses and repairs mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems, including rebuilding engines, transmissions, differentials, starters, and fuel systems.
  • Performs engine tune-ups, smog certifications, and overhauls on gasoline and diesel equipment.
  • Performs welding, fabrication, and minor body work; installs accessories and communications/emergency equipment on City vehicles; and maintains and repairs shop tools and equipment.
  • Responds to emergency and field service calls to perform on-site diagnostics and repairs of disabled equipment.
  • Maintains accurate records of repairs and prepares requisitions for parts and materials.
  • Conducts inspections of light and heavy-duty equipment to determine repair needs and cost estimates; supports preventive maintenance programs.
  • May train and provide occasional guidance to Fleet & Equipment Technician I staff.
  • Performs related duties as required.
