About The Position

Under general supervision of the Fleet Services Supervisor, the Fleet Equipment Technician assists in repairs and maintenance on heavy trucks, heavy and small equipment, and vehicles used in support of City operations. This includes automobiles, trucks, sweepers, graders, tractors, and other power-driven and mechanical equipment, ensuring that all vehicles meet State safety inspection standards. The entry-level Fleet Equipment Technician I classification follows routine procedures and guidelines and works under close supervision. The Automotive Technician II and III classifications perform more complex technical duties requiring a higher level of knowledge and skills, and are responsible for the repair, servicing, preventive maintenance, and inspection of gasoline and diesel-powered automobiles, heavy trucks, and equipment. These journey-level classifications follow diversified procedures and implement processes to accomplish end results within guidelines, performing all duties of the Fleet Technician I in addition to more advanced tasks, requiring limited supervision.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • For Technician I: One (1) year technical training in a field related to area of assignment, or one (1) year automotive/equipment repair experience; or, an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • For Technician II: Two (2) years technical training in a field related to area of assignment, or two (2) years automotive/equipment repair experience; or, an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • For Technician III: Three (3) years technical training in a field related to area of assignment, or three (3) years automotive/equipment repair experience; or, an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Possess Class C Drivers license (for Technician I).
  • Possess Class B CDL Driver's License and maintain (for Technician II).
  • Possess Class A CDL Driver's License and maintain (for Technician III).
  • Basic understanding of mechanical and automotive principles.
  • Ability to work after hours and weekends.
  • State Inspector Certification (required for II and III, must be obtained within six (6) months of hire date for I).
  • For Technician II: Possess two (2) ASE or EVT Certifications in the automotive or truck field.
  • For Technician III: Possess four (4) ASE or EVT Certifications in the automotive or truck field.
  • CDL must be obtained within one (1) year of hire date (for Technician I).

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of automotive trade school.
  • ASE or EVT Certification in the automotive or truck field (for Technician I).
  • Two (2) years automotive/equipment repair experience (for Technician I).

Responsibilities

  • Perform minor repairs on gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Perform minor repair work and adjustments on automobiles, medium and heavy duty trucks, and all types of heavy equipment.
  • Maintain records of services performed and assist with writing shop repair orders.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and state inspections on automobiles, medium and heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment, including fluid level checks and lubrication checks.
  • Diagnose malfunctioning electrical and computer components of vehicles and equipment, and determine repair actions for A/C systems, alternators, starters, steering mechanisms, electrical cooling and emission control systems, and other controls.
  • Test, diagnose, and repair malfunctions of vehicle and equipment computer, electrical, and mechanical components.
  • Perform oil changes and tune-ups on gas and diesel engines.
  • Perform complete brake service and repairs.
  • Modify, fabricate, and install special equipment.
  • Assist and work with other technicians in performing repairs.
  • In the absence of the supervisor, may lead the work activities of others.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
