About The Position

MrKitt’s Service Center & Towing is seeking a skilled, dependable, and safety-focused Flatbed / Wheel-Lift Tow Truck & Recovery Operator to join our professional towing team. This is not an entry-level position. We are looking for an experienced operator who can confidently operate both flatbed/rollback and wheel-lift towing equipment and handle assignments safely, professionally, and efficiently. Candidates must have a minimum of 3 years of verifiable professional towing and recovery experience and be capable of handling routine towing, accident scenes, vehicle recoveries, rollover vehicles, winching, wheel dollies, and double-hook assignments. We need an operator who understands that proper vehicle securement, DOT compliance, equipment safety, customer service, and good judgment are essential parts of professional towing.

Requirements

Minimum 3 years of verifiable professional towing and recovery experience.
Experienced operating both flatbed/rollback and wheel-lift tow trucks.
Proficient in the proper use of wheel dollies.
Able to properly and efficiently perform double-hook towing assignments.
Accident-scene and vehicle-recovery experience.
Experience with rollover vehicle recovery.
Strong winching and recovery skills.
Thorough understanding of vehicle stabilization.
Strong knowledge of vehicle securement and load distribution.
Understanding of recovery positioning, angles, equipment capacities, and limitations.
Valid driver's license.
Clean driving record.
Current DOT Medical Card.
Able to successfully pass a background screening.
Knowledge of applicable DOT regulations and safety requirements.
Strong customer-service and communication skills.
Must be a team player.
Dependable, punctual, responsible, and professional.
Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
Must follow company policies, safety procedures, and management direction.

Responsibilities

Safely and efficiently operate flatbed/rollback equipment, including positioning the truck, operating the bed, winch, hydraulics, and controls.
Properly load and position vehicles, understanding weight distribution and vehicle placement.
Use appropriate vehicle attachment and securement points, including straps, chains, and wheel restraints.
Safely winch disabled or accident-damaged vehicles.
Handle lowered, damaged, disabled, and specialty vehicles.
Protect customer vehicles from preventable damage.
Double-check all securement before moving the truck.
Properly position and operate a wheel lift, identifying appropriate lifting points and securing vehicles.
Use required safety chains, straps, and restraints for wheel-lift operations.
Determine when wheel dollies are necessary and properly set up and operate them.
Understand drivetrain and vehicle configurations that affect towing procedures.
Maintain proper vehicle and ground clearance.
Prevent unnecessary damage during hookup, transport, and release.
Properly, safely, and efficiently double hook when the equipment, vehicles, and assignment allow.
Understand the additional considerations involved with double-hook operations, including equipment capacity, vehicle weight, weight distribution, securement, clearances, turning and maneuverability, braking and stopping distance, overall truck handling, road and traffic conditions, and applicable safety and DOT requirements.
Inspect all connections and securement before moving and understand how the additional vehicle changes the handling characteristics of the tow truck.
Respond to accident scenes and evaluate vehicle position and condition, traffic and scene hazards, recovery angles, vehicle stabilization requirements, appropriate winching and attachment points, equipment capacity and limitations, potential for additional vehicle damage, and the need for additional equipment or personnel.
Safely approach a recovery and recognize when a recovery requires additional equipment, another operator, or a heavier recovery unit.
Perform appropriate pre-trip and post-trip inspections and regularly inspect all equipment.
Report damaged, defective, missing, or unsafe equipment immediately.
Communicate professionally with customers, dispatchers, management, law enforcement, emergency responders, repair facilities, property owners, fellow operators, and the general public.
Work effectively with minimal supervision, receiving an assignment, assessing the situation, choosing the appropriate equipment and towing/recovery method, completing the job safely, documenting the assignment, and communicating with dispatch.
Communicate, cooperate, and assist fellow drivers when necessary, and work together during complicated or multi-truck recovery operations.
Receive the call, assess the situation, identify hazards, choose the proper towing/recovery method, safely hook, load, or recover the vehicle, use dollies when required, properly double hook when appropriate, secure everything correctly, double-check the hookup, safely transport the vehicle, document the job, and communicate with dispatch.
