Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society
CA$15,000Remote

About The Position

Canada has committed to protecting 30% of its ocean estate by 2030, but there is limited information on fishing activities within Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), their scale, and impacts. This contract is for an initial project discovery and scoping phase to review publicly available data sources, assess their limitations, and develop a project plan for future work. The primary objectives are to identify and evaluate fisheries data sets, articulate research questions about fisheries within MPAs, recommend processes and methods, describe the context of fisheries management and MPAs, and make recommendations regarding project execution. This is a desk-based exercise focusing only on publicly available data.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of professional or academic experience (working or equivalent) in fisheries management, preferably in the Canadian context.
  • Deep understanding of marine conservation, spatial planning, and marine protected areas in Canada.
  • Expertise in managing and interpreting spatial data sets.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of fisheries management especially on the East and West Coasts.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of marine protected area data sources.
  • Demonstrate understanding of anticipated challenges regarding data availability.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and evaluate publicly available fisheries data sets, including an assessment of data gaps and data processing needs.
  • Articulate research questions to evaluate the presence, scale, and impact of fisheries within existing and proposed MPAs.
  • Provide recommendations on processes and methods to answer questions and, where possible, identify technical or subject matter expertise required to undertake this work.
  • Describe important context and background on fisheries management and MPAs on all three coasts that will influence future work.
  • Make recommendations regarding project execution including work flows and timelines, and project budgets.
  • Conduct bi-weekly check-in calls with the project team.
  • Compile an annotated data library/list of potential data sources, identifying challenges and limitations.
