About The Position
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is seeking an intern to work with biologists and technicians to manage natural communities and wildlife populations on Tate’s Hell and Apalachicola Wildlife Management Areas. This internship offers a significant opportunity to gain hands-on experience in surveying and monitoring locally important and imperiled wildlife species using scientifically accepted protocols, with a specific focus on the red-cockaded woodpecker. Additionally, the intern will receive basic prescribed fire training (S-130/190) and participate in prescribed burns as needed. The role requires a willingness and aptitude to learn wildlife survey techniques and prescribed fire application, along with energy, enthusiasm, and the ability to work effectively in a team setting. Candidates must be prepared to work in challenging conditions, including wet environments, biting insects, high heat, and high humidity. The selected candidate will also be expected to operate ATVs, trucks, mowers, and various electronic equipment.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in wildlife science or a closely related discipline, or graduated in May/June 2026 or graduating in December 2026.
- Willingness and aptitude to learn how to conduct wildlife surveys.
- Willingness and aptitude to learn how to apply prescribed fire.
- Ability to work effectively in a team setting.
- Ability to work in harsh conditions, including wet environments, biting insects, high heat, and high humidity.
- Must explain interest and demonstrate enthusiasm in a supporting cover letter.
- Successful completion of a background check.
