About The Position

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fish Culturist 1 located in Anchorage at William Jack Hernandez Sportfish Hatchery. This position involves performing fish stocking operations, assisting with hatchery operations, supporting the annual statewide stocking plan, providing information to the public, and performing minor fabrication, equipment repair, and facility maintenance. The role is open to Alaska Residents only, and the wage reflects a 3% increase effective July 1, 2026.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college with a major in fisheries science or a closely related field.
  • Substitution: Four years of any combination of progressively responsible work experience in aquaculture or mariculture and/or post-secondary education from an accredited college (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) in aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fish biology, fisheries, fisheries resources, fisheries sciences and management, fisheries technology, marine biology, natural resource management, oceanography, or veterinary science will substitute for the required bachelor's degree.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, lift, and stand for long periods of time, and the ability to perform moderately heavy laboring work.
  • Possession of, or access to, firearms/ammunition.
  • Ability to lift and carry more than 50 lbs.
  • Ability to obtain a DOD DBIDs card to access JBER/Fort Richardson Military Base.
  • Ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement per federal regulations (49 CFR 383) within 12 months of hire.
  • Ability to register and maintain registration with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety-sensitive duties.
  • Provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.
  • Current First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • OSHA skid steer forklift training.

  • Possesses knowledge of procedures for operating motor vehicles, including cars and trucks.

Responsibilities

  • Perform fish stocking operations by maintaining stocking trucks and transport equipment, loading and transporting fish, monitoring fish health and water quality during transport, and making operational decisions to ensure successful releases.
  • Assist with hatchery operations, including fish rearing, feeding, tank maintenance, fish transfers, growth sampling, egg collection activities, and fish health monitoring.
  • Support development and implementation of the annual statewide stocking plan by maintaining stocking databases and preparing and executing fish release schedules.
  • Provide information to the public at the hatchery and fish stocking locations by answering questions and promoting understanding of hatchery operations and sport fish enhancement programs.
  • Perform minor fabrication, equipment repair, and facility maintenance projects to ensure hatchery infrastructure, fish culture equipment, and grounds remain safe and operational.
