About The Position

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 located in Anchorage, Alaska. This is an 11-month position from April through February located at the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery. This position provides routine fish culture care for rainbow trout, arctic char, king salmon and coho salmon. In addition to daily feeding, cleaning, and data entry, the incumbent assists with size sampling, water chemistry analysis, water flow and temperature adjustments, oxygen monitoring, eggtakes for all species, incubation duties, stocking activities, and miscellaneous hatchery chores.

Requirements

High school graduation or the equivalent.
Valid driver's license required.
Ability to lift and carry more than 50 lbs.
Requires the incumbent to obtain a DOD DBIDs card to access JBER/Fort Richardson Military Base.
Exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals may occur.
Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents.
Some duties may be restricted for employees under the age of 18 in accordance with State and federal child labor laws.
Positions are seasonal or temporary.

Nice To Haves

Three months as an entry level fish and wildlife technician or aide.
Six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory.

Responsibilities

Act as member of a team to ensure fish culture duties in all production units are completed.
Assist in the early life rearing of rainbow trout, arctic char, and salmon species.
Assist in the long-term rearing of rainbow trout and arctic char captive broodstock.
Maintain daily rearing records.
Safely operate small trucks, forklifts, hand and power tools.
Hands on fish culture activities.
Data collection and entry.
Limited field work in support of wild eggtakes.
Day trips to regional lakes to conduct fish releases.
