About The Position

This is the position of Public Access Technician in the Public Access Services Office within the FWC’s Division of Habitat and Species Conservation. The Division is comprised of six Sections and two Offices. Our Office is a leader in innovative best practices to provide safe, sustainable, quality wildlife experiences and conservation opportunities to the public. This is an exciting opportunity to join our Construction and Maintenance team! The Public Access Technician is responsible for the maintenance, repair, monitoring, and implementation of public access opportunities on FWC-managed areas. This is an opportunity to directly influence and improve outdoor recreation on FWC-managed lands while working outdoors and learning about Florida’s fish, wildlife, and habitats. This position will be assigned to work at a number of different FWC-managed areas within the FWC’s Northeast Region. This is a full-time OPS position with a pay rate starting at $16.83 per hour, with health benefits. It is located in Christmas, FL at the Tosohatchee Wildlife Management Area Field Office.

Requirements

A high school diploma and 1 year of post-high school experience in wildlife, fisheries, environmental, ecological or related agriculture or construction is required.
Vocational training or an associate’s degree in wildlife, fisheries, environmental, ecological or related agriculture or construction from an accredited school or college may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
Must possess and maintain a valid minimum Class E State of Florida driver’s license.
Must be able to operate ATVs, tractors, heavy equipment, and tools.
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, work in remote areas and under inclement weather conditions.
Occasional overnight travel is required.

Ability to operate ATVs, 4x4 vehicles, paddlecraft, and small powerboats.
Ability to accurately read and interpret maps and charts.

Responsibilities

Assessing, cleaning, maintaining, and repairing public access infrastructure such as signs, trails, kiosks, boardwalks, picnic areas, wildlife observation platforms, and other structures.
Clearing, marking, and maintaining recreational trails and trailheads.
Proposing new public access opportunities for potential implementation.
Monitoring trails and facilities on FWC’s managed areas to ensure they meet agency and state requirements.
Maintaining all equipment in safe, useable condition.
Constructing amenities such as camping platforms and benches.
Developing relationships with local recreationists including, hiking, biking, horseback riding, paddling, fishing, and hunting.
Participating in outreach programs such as interacting with users on the areas and attending volunteer work events.
Providing assistance to FWC-managed area staff on various projects.
Conducting general handyman work.
