About The Position

Uncommon Schools is seeking an experienced First Robotics Competition (FRC) coach to guide a team at Washington Park High School. This role is crucial for providing students with an edge in college admissions and persistence through nationally recognized competitive programs. The coach will lead a "Project," a class that meets twice a week for two hours, and will also conduct after-school practices. During the build season (January - April), the coach will work with students for several hours after school and on weekends to prepare for competition. Candidates who competed in FRC while in high school are preferred. This is a part-time coaching role.

Requirements

  • Experience coaching First Robotics Competition (FRC).
  • Ability to lead a "Project" class that meets twice a week for two hours.
  • Willingness to conduct after-school practices.
  • Availability for several hours after school and on weekends during the build season (January - April).
  • Commitment to the full duration of the coaching role from August to June.
  • Ability to manage team members and confirm commitment via signed parent permission form.
  • Proficiency in using the Remind app for family communication.

  • Candidates who competed in FRC while in high school are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare for Projects, competitions, and after-school practices (up to 2 hours per week).
  • Conduct Fall Semester Practices (4 hours per week total).
  • Provide long-term coaching during “Projects” (meet with students Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1 hour each day, from August to June).
  • Continue practices after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays (1 hour each day).
  • Manage Build Season activities (January - April), including 8 hours per week total for practices and coaching.
  • Conduct at least 6 hours of practice outside of school hours weekly during build season, working directly with students.
  • Continue practices after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays and additional practice hours on other days of the week during build season.
  • Manage Spring activities (April-June), including wrapping up the competition year, inventorying and ordering new materials, preparing student leaders, and beginning recruitment of new team members (2 hours per week total).
  • Register for and participate in an off-season competition (2-3 weekends per school year).
  • Register for and participate in at least one regional/district competition (2-3 weekends per school year).
  • Identify team members and confirm commitment via signed parent permission form indicating after-school commitment.
  • Establish a family communication protocol using the Remind app to update families about competition, after-school practices, and any other time outside of school that students will be doing club-related activities.
