About The Position

Uncommon Schools is seeking an experienced First Robotics Competition (FRC) coach to guide a team at Washington Park High School. This role is crucial for providing students with an edge in college admissions and persistence through nationally recognized competitive programs. The coach will lead a "Project," a class that meets twice a week for two hours, and will also have responsibilities outside of regular class time, including after-school hours and weekends during build season. Candidates who competed in FRC during high school are preferred. This is a part-time position reporting to the Enrichment Program Manager.

Requirements

  • Experience as a First Robotics Competition (FRC) coach.
  • Ability to lead a "Project" class that meets twice a week for two hours.
  • Willingness to work after school hours and on weekends during build season.
  • Ability to prepare for Projects, competitions, and after-school practices.
  • Ability to conduct practices and lead long-term coaching sessions.
  • Ability to manage build season activities and provide direct student coaching.
  • Ability to wrap up the competition year, manage inventory, prepare leaders, and recruit new members.
  • Ability to register for and participate in competitions.
  • Ability to confirm student commitment via signed parent permission forms.
  • Ability to establish and manage a family communication protocol using the Remind app.

  • Candidates who competed in FRC while in high school are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare for Projects, competitions, and after-school practices (up to 2 hours per week).
  • Conduct Fall Semester Practices (4 hours per week total).
  • Lead long-term coaching during "Projects" (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1 hour each day, August to June).
  • Continue practices after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays (1 hour each day).
  • Manage Build Season activities (January - April), including approximately 8 hours per week total.
  • Provide at least 6 hours of practice outside of school hours weekly during build season, working directly with students.
  • Conduct Spring activities (April-June), including wrapping up the competition year, inventorying and ordering materials, preparing student leaders, and recruiting new team members (2 hours per week total).
  • Register for and participate in one off-season competition.
  • Register for and participate in at least one regional/district competition.
  • Confirm student commitment via signed parent permission forms due to significant after-school time commitment.
  • Establish a family communication protocol using the Remind app in partnership with the school-based Student Talent Manager to update families on club activities.
