About The Position

The First Inspection role is responsible for identifying and recording casting defects, their severity, and the responsible department to assist engineering and process control in resolving processing variations. This role also verifies the alloy type in each casting and visually inspects castings before they are released for further processing. The primary objectives are to visually inspect and verify part quality through instrumentation tests, record defects and process control problems for timely analysis, and work with engineering, process control, and other plant departments to identify and resolve problems found during inspection. Safety is also a key objective, requiring adherence to safety rules and safe operation of equipment.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of one or more of the stages of the investment casting process is preferred, OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Ability to follow instructions, read, write, and perform arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Ability to attend to details.
  • Ability to lift and or maneuver objects weighing thirty to fifty pounds and occasionally up to seventy five pounds.
  • Ability to work in difficult working conditions, which may include exposure to noise, dust, temperature extremes, awkward positions and other elements for extended periods of time.

Responsibilities

  • Visually inspect all castings for defects, using boroscopes, mirrors and other hand tools when necessary
  • Verifies the alloy composition of all castings and weld patches using Acromag and Kevex spectral analyzer; programs analyzer and reviews results.
  • Verifies alloy type of x-ray "pennies" laid on film.
  • Routes parts.
  • Records type of defects, severity, location and responsible department; prepares reports.
  • Documents and identifies unusual or recurring problems with parts and brings to the attention of the appropriate individual.
  • Reviews, completes and assures accurate documentation.
  • Completes special reports as requested by engineering or process control.
  • Contacts engineering personnel for their inspection of parts when necessary and or requested.
  • Assists Production Supervision and Part Product Engineers in evaluation of samples, trials and experiments.
  • Assists Process Control in monitoring part quality.
  • Contacts Investing, Casting and other production departments as appropriate regarding part defects.
  • Adheres to plant and department safety rules.
  • Safely operates all equipment and tools.
  • Identifies and reports safety problems.
  • Performs other tasks as directed.
  • May be required to handle hazardous waste.
  • Complete scrap assignments; collect scrap parts, complete paperwork to assign responsible departments and route scrap.
