About The Position

Under direct supervision, the Firefighter protects lives and property by performing firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and fire prevention duties, and maintains fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities. This posting is for lateral applicants. Lateral applicants must hold the required certifications when applying and have two years of experience in work that required either certification, with no break in service longer than 12 months before the application date. Service credit is based on continuous full-time employment requiring the certifications. The position is eligible for certification pay of up to $2,400 annually. Applicants must complete the required screening process, including certification verification, a physical agility test, oral interview, background investigation, drug and alcohol screening, medical physical assessment, psychological examination, and polygraph examination. The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to read, write, and speak English. Applicants must meet applicable Texas Commission on Fire Protection standards and the stated vision requirements. Required certifications must be attached to the online application. The job is classified as safety-sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing during employment. Work is primarily performed in vehicles and outdoors, in varied weather and emergency conditions, with exposure to fire, medical, chemical, environmental, and other workplace hazards. The role may require strenuous physical effort over prolonged periods, lifting and moving items, and being called back to duty.

Requirements

At least 18 years of age.
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Valid driver’s license; must possess and maintain a valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License, or equivalent if out of state, with an acceptable driving record, or be able to obtain one within one year of employment.
Ability to read, write, and speak English.
At application, possess Texas Commission on Fire Protection Structure Firefighter Certification and Texas Department of State Health Services Paramedic Certification; attach both certifications to the online application.
At least two years of experience in work requiring either of the specified certifications, with no break in service longer than 12 months before the application date.
Meet applicable Texas Commission on Fire Protection minimum standards and the stated visual acuity, visual field, and night-vision standards.
Pass the certification verification, Physical Agility Test, oral interview, background investigation, drug and alcohol screening, medical physical assessment, psychological examination, and polygraph examination.
Pass pre-employment drug screening, polygraph test, psychological examination, CJIS and fingerprint check, criminal background check, and physical examination.
Maintain required certifications and license, and meet City of Midlothian driving standards.
Practical knowledge of firefighting and emergency medical services, with appropriate analytical judgment and decision-making.
Knowledge of city and departmental practices, procedures, and systems, and safe and effective fire-extinguishing methods.
Ability to use Basic and Advanced Life Support equipment and skills in accordance with applicable EMT curriculum objectives.
Skill in operating fire pumps, hoses, ladders, radios, personal computers, and phones.
Ability to read varied materials, perform practical calculations and measurements, and prepare reports and other written materials with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
Strong oral and written communication skills, customer-service skills, discretion, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to maintain emotional control and respond effectively to emergencies and distressed or injured individuals.
Ability to follow instructions and safety practices, perform work accurately and thoroughly, handle multiple tasks under time pressures, and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to be punctual and attend work regularly.
Ability to perform strenuous or peak physical effort for prolonged periods in emergency conditions and to frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
Comply with safety-sensitive employment requirements, including random drug and alcohol testing during employment.

Responsibilities

Perform firefighting activities, including operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and carrying out fire combat, containment, and extinguishment tasks.
Provide emergency medical services, including pre-hospital treatment and transportation at the EMT-P and paramedic level.
Participate in fire drills and attend classes in firefighting, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, and related subjects.
Receive and relay fire calls and alarms, and operate radios and other communications equipment.
Participate in fire-prevention inspections of buildings, hydrants, and other structures.
Maintain fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities; perform minor repairs; and wash, dry, clean, polish, maintain, and test equipment and apparatus.
As assigned, assist with coordinating, instructing, or supervising new recruits and perform Field Training Officer duties, including daily training, evaluation sheets, and quality-assurance checks on reports.
Perform Fire Engineer duties as needed.
Present community programs on safety, medical, and fire-prevention topics.
Perform general maintenance of fire facilities and equipment, including cleaning, groundskeeping, and minor repairs.
Assist in developing plans for special assignments involving emergency preparedness, hazardous communications, training, firefighting, hazardous materials, and emergency medical activities.
Perform salvage operations, such as placing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris.
Perform other duties as assigned.
