About The Position

Firefighters at the University of Notre Dame serve as the primary providers of fire protection, emergency medical services (EMS), fire prevention, fire detection, and fire and life safety education for the University community. As critical members of the University's public safety team, firefighters protect life, property, and the continuity of University operations through emergency response, prevention efforts, and community engagement. Firefighters work 24-hour shifts and maintain a constant state of readiness to respond to a wide range of emergencies, including medical incidents, fire alarms, hazardous conditions, and reports of fire. Response responsibilities extend throughout the University of Notre Dame campus, as well as St. Mary’s College, Holy Cross College, and surrounding mutual aid jurisdictions. In addition to emergency response duties, firefighters conduct fire and life safety inspections to identify and address code violations and hazardous conditions. They perform testing, inspection, and maintenance of fire alarm and fire protection systems; maintain departmental apparatus, equipment, and facilities; and participate in ongoing training to ensure operational readiness. Firefighters also play a key role in educating students, faculty, staff, and visitors on fire prevention and life safety practices. This position is designated as critical staffing and is essential to maintaining continuous emergency response and public safety services for the University community.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in firefighting, emergency medical services, or a related emergency response field.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team in dynamic and demanding environments.
  • Ability to perform duties with minimal supervision while exercising sound judgment during emergency situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm, focused, and professional in high-stress and life-threatening incidents.
  • Commitment to protecting life, property, and the well-being of the University community.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated compassion, patience, empathy, and professionalism when assisting individuals experiencing emergencies or crises.

  • Ability to maintain physical and mental readiness required for emergency response operations.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree or Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) in Fire Science, Emergency Management, Public Safety, Emergency Medical Services, or a related field.
