The City of Steamboat Springs is creating an eligibility list for entry-level and lateral Firefighter Paramedics to fill future vacancies with Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue (SSFR). The list remains active until June 30, 2027, or until exhausted, whichever comes first. The Firefighter/Paramedic is a dual-role position providing advanced emergency medical care as well as firefighting services. Depending on the emergency, duties include basic and advanced life support, extrication and rescue, fire suppression, and hazard control. The role requires independent patient assessment and treatment, use of established medical protocols, supervision of patient care, and documentation of patient care and emergency events. Work may take place under stressful conditions and involve exposure to contagious disease and environmental, chemical, and physical hazards. The position works under the general supervision of a Fire Captain or Fire Lieutenant. On emergency scenes, the Firefighter/Paramedic supervises personnel involved in patient care. In daily operations, the position may supervise Firefighter/EMTs assigned to the ambulance and may assist with supervising crews, recruits, or other part-time department personnel. Firefighters work a 48-hour rotating schedule, including weekends and holidays, with overtime and emergency call-back as needed. A traditional workweek schedule may be assigned at times. Applicants should submit a cover letter, resume, letters of recommendation, and supporting documents or certifications. The stated annual pay range for Firefighter-Paramedic is $80,452–$111,263, with placement based on experience. The posting also lists a pay range of $26.83–$37.11 and says offers are negotiated based on qualifications. The role is eligible for merit under the City’s pay-for-performance philosophy. Full-time roles are eligible for comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, and vision coverage options, an Employee Assistance Program, and a 401(a) plan with company match. Physical requirements include passing SSFR’s physical ability evaluation and annual arduous-duty requirements, including an arduous-duty pack test and medical evaluation. The job involves occasional lifting of more than 100 pounds while wearing protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus, dragging hose weighing up to 150 pounds, carrying and operating equipment weighing 80 pounds, rescue work, ladder and rooftop operations, and maneuvering over uneven terrain and through confined spaces. The work environment includes indoor and outdoor settings, adverse weather, emergency hazards, potentially loud noise, and physically strenuous and stressful situations.
