Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Firefighter II (240 CARD) and Paramedic Certification
  • Currently in the OP &F OR OPERS pension system.
  • Demonstrate the ability to handle the physical requirements of the job
  • Availability to work shift assignments.
  • Firefighter must participate in and satisfactorily complete training programs required by the Fire Chief.
  • Ability to document identity and employment eligibility with three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.
  • State of Ohio motor vehicle operator's license
  • Firefighter II and Emergency Medical Technician certification.
  • 18 years of age for Firefighter appointment.
  • No person shall be eligible to receive an original appointment on or after the person's forty-first birthday (O.R.C. 124.42).

  • Applicants are required to read the Public Safety Information Book prior to application.
  • A thorough background investigation will be conducted into the applicant's work experience, reference checks, criminal activities, character, trustworthiness, and dependability.
  • Applicant will also be subjected to a polygraph examination.
  • Selected applicants will be subjected to a psychological exam and a physical/drug screen.

Responsibilities

  • Fights fires; protects and saves lives/property; encourages fire prevention.
  • Maintains fire equipment and facilities.
  • Responds to emergency medical calls; fire alarms; follows firefighting and rescue strategies as directed by the Incident Commander.
  • Extinguishes fires.
  • Places hoses and ladders in proper position, climbs ladder, operates pumps, directs streams of water or uses other extinguishing agents as appropriate.
  • Ventilates structures by opening windows, cutting holes or other means.
  • Operates aerial ladders, fire extinguishers, and other hand tools when needed.
  • Works inside, outside or on top of burning and other smoke filled structures.
  • Rescues persons trapped in burning buildings.
  • Takes appropriate measures to protect and preserve lives and property.
  • Responds to vehicle and boating accidents, drownings, heart attacks, hazardous material spills, and other emergency situations.
  • Administers emergency medical care and CPR; takes other appropriate actions to assist injured persons.
  • Responds to other situations such as flooded basements, gas leaks, and other requests.
  • Conducts salvage operations.
  • Places salvage covers, remove excess water, shovels debris, patches windows/holes and performs other cleanup as directed.
  • Assists in fire investigations to determine origin of fire.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment in a safe operating condition.
  • Refuels vehicles; refills water tanks; recharges air bottles and extinguishers; cleans trucks and hand tools; dries and reloads hoses and performs other work needed to return vehicle and equipment to service.
  • Maintains vehicles and equipment in proper mechanical operational condition.
  • Utilizes daily and weekly checklists to ensure proper operation.
  • Refers major mechanical repairs to the vehicle maintenance department.
  • Performs general maintenance and housekeeping duties to fire division facilities, building and grounds as directed.
  • Cuts grass, sweeps/washes floors and walls, cleans living areas and performs general repair work.
  • Checks flushes and paints hydrants as needed.
  • Performs fire prevention duties as assigned.
  • Inspects commercial/public buildings, trains hospital/school personnel in evacuation procedures and use of extinguishers.
  • Makes presentations on fire prevention to various age groups.
  • Completes fire and EMS run sheets, equipment check records, and other documentation as necessary.
  • Maintains/improves rescue, firefighting/emergency medical skills.
  • Attends training sessions, studies material concerning fire hazards and firefighting/rescue methods.
  • Maintains current knowledge of department technology, City Street/landmark locations and all division equipment.
  • Conducts tours of firehouse and equipment to school children/public; and promote fire prevention and safety.
