The Uncertified Firefighter/EMT is a sworn firefighting position that requires the selected applicant to pass an NFPA 1583 physical upon acceptance and annually thereafter. The individual must complete a rigorous fire academy within a timeframe set by the Fire Chief or designee. Upon completion of the academy and obtaining certifications such as Hazardous Materials Operations, Firefighter 1 and 2, NWCG S-130/190/L-180, all required NIMS certifications, driver operator, basic EMS for firefighters, and an approved CPR course, the individual will be assigned to a shift. While on shift, responsibilities include continued training, responding to emergencies, completing apparatus and facility checks, and maintaining equipment. The position also requires completing Emergency Medical Technician Basic training and passing the National Registry test within a maximum of three attempts. Once all requirements are met, the individual will be recognized as a certified firefighter. The scheduled position is 48 hours on duty/96 hours off duty, but may involve 40-hour weeks during training until fire academy completion.
