About The Position

The North Port Fire Rescue Department is seeking Firefighter EMTs and Firefighter Paramedics to join their team. This role involves responding to a wide range of emergencies, including fires and medical incidents, within a coverage area of over 104 square miles and serving a population of approximately 93,000+. The department operates from six fire stations (with a seventh under construction) and staffs multiple ALS Engines, ALS Quints, a Tanker, ALS Rescues, and District Chiefs daily. The duties encompass fire suppression, emergency medical care, equipment operation, rescue operations, station maintenance, and continuous training to maintain proficiency in both firefighting and emergency medical techniques.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Progressive knowledge and application of firefighting and emergency medical skills.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and/or written instructions promptly, effectively, and efficiently under varied and difficult conditions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working skills and knowledge.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and interpret English.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
  • Computer literate - must possess the skills necessary to use word processing type programs and basic computer operations.
  • Work under stress while performing at a high level.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of physical fitness while wearing appropriate PPE including but not limited to SCBA, turn out gear, and wildland gear.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
  • Must hold a current State of Florida Firefighter I and Firefighter II Certificate of Compliance by November 21, 2025.
  • Must be certified by the State of Florida as and EMT or Paramedic by November 21, 2025.
  • Applicants must achieve a passing score on the Fire Team Test.
  • Must have taken and passed the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) within the past 12 months.
  • Complete the City of North Port Application in its entirety.
  • CPAT and Fire Team must be successfully completed prior to application submittal.
  • Submit legible copies of required supporting documents: Valid EMT and/or Paramedic License issued by the State of Florida (or proof of enrollment and expected certification by 11/21/2025), Valid State of Florida Firefighter Certificate of Compliance/Minimum Standards (or proof of enrollment and expected certification by 11/21/2025), Valid Drivers License, Current BLS Card, Current ACLS Card (Paramedic Only).
  • Successfully complete the mandatory North Port Fire Rescue ability test.
  • Attend panel oral interview and Fire Chiefs interview.
  • Complete background check including driving history.
  • Be deemed fit for duty by a Life Scan Physical Exam including but not limited to physical exam, blood work, drug screen, chest x-ray, cardiac stress test, eye exam and hearing test.

  • Preference to interview will be given to: Veterans, Local candidates, State of Florida Paramedics or those in paramedic school, Those holding a journey worker certificate.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to fire and emergency medical calls; evaluate situations and assist with administering medical treatment per Emergency Medical Services (EMS) guidelines.
  • Drive and operate apparatus and equipment safely in response to and in the mitigation of emergencies.
  • Stretch hose lines and direct fire streams to extinguish and contain fires; raise and climb ladders to perform search and rescue procedures along with ventilation of burning structures.
  • Proactively clean and maintain fire station facilities and equipment and other related apparatus.
  • Operate emergency radios.
  • Participate in drills, classes and schools in firefighting, emergency medical treatment and other fire service-related areas.
  • Operate equipment as used for the control and extinguishment of fires such as: fire hose, nozzles, ladders, ropes, axes, water tools and appliances, aerial ladder devices, rescue equipment, power and manual hand tools, self-contained breathing apparatus, firefighting protective clothing ensemble, hazardous materials protective clothing and related tools and equipment.
  • Operate equipment required for treatment of the sick and injured including bandages, splints, blood pressure monitoring equipment, spinal immobilization equipment, hydraulic power tools for extrication purposes and other medical treatment hand tools.
  • Conduct readiness inspections of apparatus and equipment, pre-fire planning of buildings, lift assists, smoke detector assistance, report writing, and public relations details.
  • Comply with North Port Fire Rescue Rules & Regulations, Policies and Procedures, Standard Operating Guidelines, and Emergency Medical Protocols.
  • Provide exceptional public safety services in a safe, compassionate and professional manner.

All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official job description. Assignments in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature, with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically and operationally challenging conditions.
