About The Position

Carnegie Mellon University is seeking a passionate Fire Safety Specialist to join the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) team. This role is integral to growing the university’s fire safety program and involves performing assessments, providing training, developing guidelines, conducting drills, managing permit programs, and supporting other EHS staff. The ideal candidate is adaptable, excellent, and passionate, with strong integrity and the ability to interact effectively with diverse partners.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Safety, Engineering, or a related field.
Current Fire Inspector I certification issued by the International Code Council (ICC) or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
Minimum of 3 to 5 years of fire safety experience or equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
Experience with fire protection and life safety systems.
Experience in delivering fire safety education programs.
Demonstrated ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team environment.
Successful completion of a pre-employment background check
Child Protection Clearances (Act 153)
Pre-Employment drug and alcohol screening

Prior experience in a higher education setting, research facility, hospital system, or other campus environment preferred.

Responsibilities

Performs fire and life safety assessments of assigned buildings to identify potential fire hazards and fire code compliance issues.
Documents assessment findings and works with campus partners to remediate identified issues.
Provides fire safety training for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
Assists with the development and implementation of fire safety guidelines and community risk reduction initiatives.
Conducts periodic fire/emergency evacuation drills.
Manages the “hot work” and “fire protection system impairment” permit programs.
Participates in the EHS emergency “on call” program.
Maintains accurate recordkeeping and provides status updates to the supervisor on a periodic basis.
Provides support and assists other EHS professional staff in resolving safety and health issues (including indoor air quality investigations, etc.).
Other duties as assigned.
