About The Position

Under the supervision of the Fire Marshal, this position is responsible for inspecting campus buildings and residential property to ensure compliance with applicable fire codes life safety regulations, and institutional policies. Inspects fire protection systems, which may include Fire/Smoke, Fire Sprinkler, Fire Exits, and Fire Suppression. Performs a variety of life safety prevention, fire safety training, and enforcement duties, and perform other related work as assigned. This position is scheduled to work a 4/10 alternative work schedule.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must possess certificate of completion or in the process of completing certificate from State Fire Marshall for Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D
  • Must obtain Motion Picture/TV FSO training within 6 months of hire.
  • Skills in the operation of a motor vehicle under emergency and other Public Safety related conditions, with the ability to understand and follow University safe driving procedures and the California vehicle code.
  • Accurate report writing skills including the proper use of grammar, punctuation and spelling.
  • Ability to quickly assess a situation and determine the appropriate course of action.
  • Ability to interpret and follow University and fire safety codes, regulations and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in a helpful, effective and professional manner in person, by telephone and by two-way radio.
  • Legible handwriting such that all logs and reports can be easily read by others.
  • Technical skills to learn and use enterprise systems and departmental tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work and serve a diverse group of individuals at all organizational levels both inside and outside the University.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy and maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws and guidelines as they apply to fire prevention.
  • Knowledge of campus buildings, roadways, parking lots, fire and intrusion alarm systems and keys.
  • Must have and maintain in good standing, valid California Driver License.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts Fire and Life inspections of academic, administrative, residential, and auxiliary campus facilities.
  • Inspects fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems, standpipes, extinguishers, exit signage, emergency lighting, fire doors, and suppression systems for compliance with applicable fire codes and university standards.
  • Fire safety standby for special events and film productions as required by state and local regulations.
  • Conduct Campus fire safety education and training for students, faculty, staff, and campus organizations.
  • Assist the Fire Marshal with program development and special projects.
  • Assist with annual regulatory inspections and compliance reporting.
  • Liaison with the Orange Fire department and other state regulatory agencies to ensure campus compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
