About The Position

Perform responsibilities for the development, coordination, and delivery of various fire prevention and life safety education information programs and events that require considerable contact with residents, schools, and community groups. Through education and programs, the person in this position is responsible for engaging the community and soliciting support and cooperation to build and maintain effective networks.

Requirements

  • Five (5) years of experience as a State of Georgia firefighter with a minimum of 3 years with East Point Fire Department.
  • Must be an EMT Advanced or higher.
  • Must obtain an Associate's Degree in Fire Science or a related field.
  • Must obtain State of Georgia certification as a Georgia Company Officer as well as Fire Safety Educator and Fire Instructor.
  • Must obtain EMS Instructor.
  • Knowledge of methods, techniques, and trends involved in the development, administration, implementation, and evaluation of emergency management community education programs.
  • Knowledge of fire safety, emergency preparedness, community organizations, and agencies.
  • Ability to assist in the development of age and audience specific curriculum.
  • Ability to learn and apply laws, rules, regulations, City and Departmental policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively receive and respond to verbal and written orders.
  • Ability to work independently within established processes and procedures.
  • Ability to demonstrate resourcefulness, courtesy, and initiative.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with individuals from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to prepare concise and accurate reports.
  • Ability to perform duties within a specified budget.
  • Ability to respond effectively to difficult individual and group interactions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other team members.
  • Ability to understand and operate a variety of audio-visual and computer equipment and programs to present information in an effective way.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, media, schools, community groups, and public officials.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, coordinate, and implement the department’s public fire and life safety education programs about various community trends and routine fire services.
  • Participate in community activities/projects as assigned.
  • Assist with grant applications and awards for public safety education or emergency medical services.
  • Administer the fiscal resources assigned to community education and programs.
  • Monitor and evaluate the various educational programs related to identify community needs, emergency activities, and the City of East Point Department goals.
  • Assist in the development of new programs to enhance fire and life safety within diverse areas of the community.
  • Coordinate the activities of the East Point Fire Department Operations Division personnel and community volunteers in fire-related public education.
  • Maintain accurate records of educational programs, events, and activities.
  • Participate in specialized training, conferences, and seminars as available and appropriate.
  • Assist in the creation of public presentations and train others in the methods required for effective delivery.
  • Assist in the development of new programs and ideas to extend the Fire Department’s Community Outreach program.
  • Assist with the Fire Department’s Newsletter.
  • Assist the Fire Department’s Public Information Officer.
  • Create and disseminate the Fire Department’s press releases, advisories, speaking points, and safety tips.
  • Engage school-aged children in learning by visiting children and conducting story time and fire service-related education.
  • Participate in school career days.
  • Participate in community activities and projects as assigned.
  • Shall maintain all EMS tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
