About The Position

Dominion Energy is hiring one Fire Protection Engineer at the level commensurate with the successful candidate’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The role is part of the Corporate Risk Engineering team and performs risk and fire protection engineering for company facilities and projects. The engineer specifies, reviews, commissions, and supports fire protection and loss control systems for capital projects and operating units. Work includes industrial and high-hazard occupancies such as offshore facilities, battery energy storage systems, solar, petrochemical and LNG facilities, power generation, and traditional storage and commercial occupancies. The role emphasizes fire alarm and suppression systems, particularly special-hazard systems used in energy facilities, and also leads specialized programs in process safety, jurisdictional boiler and pressure-vessel inspections, and public safety education. The engineer leads external property and boiler/machinery risk inspections and surveys, conducts internal risk engineering surveys, and scopes and leads risk-improvement projects arising from survey recommendations and internal standards. As a technical fire protection and risk engineering lead on complex projects, the engineer provides expertise that can affect project viability and constructability. The engineer directs outside designers and engineering technologists, reviews their work for compliance with codes and company standards, and approves installation. After construction, the engineer reviews the installed systems, leads commissioning, and accepts the systems on behalf of the company. The posting covers Fire Protection Engineer I, II, and III. The stated job summary describes the mid-level Engineer II role, which is the second level in the series and handles greater complexity than Engineer I. Engineer I requires 0–2 years of fire protection engineering experience; Engineer II requires 3 or more years; and Engineer III requires 5 or more years. A master’s degree counts as one year toward the experience requirement for levels II and III. A hybrid 3-2 schedule is offered: three days in the office and two days teleworking. Dominion Energy cannot transfer or sponsor a work visa or employment authorization for this position.

Requirements

  • Fire Protection Engineer I: 0–2 years of fire protection engineering experience; Engineer II: 3 or more years; Engineer III: 5 or more years. A partial year of related experience of six months or greater counts as one year toward qualifications.
  • Meet one of the required engineering criteria: a four-year ABET-accredited Fire Protection Engineering degree; a four-year ABET-accredited engineering degree plus a master’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering; a four-year non-ABET engineering, physics, chemistry, math, or engineering technology degree plus a postgraduate Fire Protection Engineering degree from an institution whose undergraduate program in the same engineering discipline is ABET-accredited; or a current or previously held valid U.S. Professional Engineer license in Fire Protection Engineering.
  • For Engineer I, the required ABET-accredited Fire Protection Engineering degree may be completed by June 1, 2026. The posting also states that Engineer I applicants must possess or will possess the qualifying degree by June 2026, or possess a current or expired Fire Protection Engineering P.E.
  • For Engineer II and III, possess an ABET-accredited engineering degree specifically in Fire Protection Engineering or a current or expired Fire Protection Engineering P.E. A master’s degree counts as one year toward the experience requirement for these levels.
  • Knowledge of fire protection engineering theories and principles.
  • Knowledge of explosion mitigation systems, including systems installed in accordance with NFPA 68 and 69.
  • Knowledge of IBC and NFPA codes, including codes used in high-hazard industrial applications.
  • Knowledge of industry and insurance standards such as FM, API, or DNV-GL.
  • Knowledge of gas, flame, and other safety-related process control systems.
  • Knowledge of hand calculations or calculation software for water-based and clean-agent fire suppression, fire dynamics, and deflagration venting.
  • Ability to evaluate risks in energy and high-hazard industrial environments.
  • Knowledge of property- and machinery-related failure modes and mitigations for large power-generation equipment, LNG/petrochemical facilities, offshore facilities, and renewable technologies such as BESS and hydrogen.
  • Knowledge of Process Hazard Analyses, including HAZOPs and LOPA’s.
  • Knowledge of cryogenic protection and passive fire protection for petrochemical applications.
  • Ability to develop and exercise leadership skills; make effective decisions; communicate effectively orally and in writing, including technical writing; think analytically and solve complex problems; interpret codes, regulations, and practices; work independently and in a team; process information quickly; and manage multiple tasks effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Specify, review, commission, and provide ongoing support for fire protection and loss control systems across company capital projects and operating units.
  • Lead specialized risk engineering programs, including the company process safety program, jurisdictional boiler and pressure-vessel inspection program, and Public Safety Education program.
  • Lead external property and boiler/machinery risk engineering inspections and surveys and conduct internal risk engineering surveys.
  • Scope and lead risk-improvement projects that address survey recommendations and internal risk engineering standards.
  • Serve as the technical fire protection and risk engineering lead on complex projects, including new generating, petrochemical/LNG, and renewable energy facilities.
  • Provide technical direction and specifications to outside designers and engineering technologists designing fire protection and risk management systems.
  • Review design work products for compliance with building and fire codes and internal standards, and approve installation.
