About The Position

This is an unpaid volunteer position with the City of Fountain Valley Fire Department. The volunteer will support the Fire Prevention Division by performing a variety of technical and entry-level administrative tasks. This role involves assisting with administrative duties, observing fire inspections, providing public inquiries support, conducting research, assisting with reports and presentations, and aiding in disaster preparedness, public education programs, and special events. Travel to various City locations may be required.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • High School Graduate or GED.
  • Currently enrolled or have completed coursework in Fire Technology, Fire Science, Public or Business Administration, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Willing to volunteer a minimum of 4 hours per week.
  • Must live within 30 miles of the City.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Class “C” Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Successfully complete all components of the pre-employment process, which may include a California Department of Justice (DOJ) criminal history check (Live Scan fingerprinting).

Nice To Haves

  • Previous Fire experience is highly desirable.
  • Fire Prevention 1A and 1B Fire Tech "core" classes.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with administrative tasks assigned by Fire Administration staff.
  • Observe fire inspections, such as hazardous material and new construction inspections.
  • Provide administrative support work, including answering inquiries from the public, on the telephone, and via e-mail.
  • Independently conduct surveys and research utilizing Internet searches, City websites, telephone calls, and other means of collecting data and information.
  • Assist with reports, summaries, charts, and presentations related to the research and analysis conducted.
  • Assist with disaster preparedness and public education programs.
  • Assist with special events.
  • Travel to various City locations to observe fire inspection, and assist with public education programs and special events.
