About The Position

Under the direction of the Fire Prevention Battalion Chief, performs a variety of technical inspections of public, commercial, industrial, residential and other buildings and property to ensure compliance with the City's fire prevention codes and regulations; investigates fire safety violations; conducts fire investigations; conducts plan reviews of construction plans for fire code compliance; and participates in the development of fire safety educational programs. This position is covered by the Carson City Firefighters Association, Local #2251. The current collective bargaining agreement outlines the generous benefits offered to these employees.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or the equivalent and two years experience of sworn firefighting, or prevention and inspection work; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.
  • Must have a current Nevada Driver's license.
  • Possession of a current certification in CPR, ICC Fire Inspector 2 certification, ICC Fire Plans Examiner Certification, NFA 80 hour Fire Investigator Class/Certification or equivalent.
  • Wildland Fire Investigator certification, and Fire Investigation - FI-210.
  • Knowledge of fire hazards, related prevention and abatement methods.
  • Knowledge of fire prevention inspection methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of basic fire suppression methods, procedures and equipment.
  • Knowledge of codes, laws, policies and procedures relating to fire prevention.
  • Knowledge of building construction and material's used.
  • Knowledge of public relations as they relate to obtaining cooperation and compliance to fire codes and laws.
  • Knowledge of principles of training and public speaking.
  • Ability to conduct complex fire inspection, plan reviews, and code enforcement work.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries, complaints and requests for service.
  • Ability to speak publicly and give presentations to the general public and other targeted audiences.
  • Ability to deal effectively with property owners, managers and the general public in difficult work situations.
  • Ability to detect fire hazards and make recommendations for their corrections.
  • Ability to observe and record findings during inspections.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to effectively use current digital technology.
  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office Suite applications.
  • Ability to investigate fires for possible cause.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections of building and property for fire hazards, efficiency of fire protective equipment, adequacy of fire exits and general compliance with fire prevention laws and standards.
  • Perform functional tests of automatic fire extinguishing systems and alarm systems.
  • May assist or conduct Fire investigations.
  • Advise property owners on the removal of fire hazards and enforce compliance to correct hazards.
  • Receive and investigate complaints of alleged fire hazards and recommended corrective action as necessary to resolve complaints; answer questions and provide information to the public.
  • Review construction documents in relation to fire prevention laws and codes and for business license compliance.
  • Conduct inspections for business license compliance.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Maintain incident reports and prepare reports.
  • Perform work in a safe manner.
