About The Position

Under general supervision of the Fire Prevention Battalion Chief, performs a variety of routine fire prevention and inspection of work including fire code enforcement and fire safety education program administration. Applicants must submit to a pre-placement physical. This position is covered by the Carson City Firefighters Association, Local #2251.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or completion of a GED supplemented by specialized training in fire science, fire prevention, investigation, or a related field; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Possession of a current certification in CPR within 3 months of hire.
  • Knowledge of basic fire hazards, related prevention and abatement methods.
  • Knowledge of principles of fire prevention and safety education.
  • Knowledge of codes, laws, policies and procedures relating to fire prevention.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of public relations as they relate to obtaining cooperation and compliance to fire codes and laws.
  • Ability to conduct routine fire inspection and code enforcement work.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries, complaints and requests for service in a fair, tactful and firm manner.
  • Ability to speak publicly and give presentations.
  • Ability to deal effectively with property owners, managers and the general public in difficult work situations.
  • Ability to detect fire hazards and make recommendations for their correction.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Nice To Haves

  • One year experience in non-sworn education, prevention, and inspection work is desirable.
  • Possession of a current ICC Fire Inspector 1 certification or Nevada State Fire Marshal Fire Inspector certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver fire safety and prevention educational programs to local schools, community groups and members of the general public.
  • Conduct routine inspections of buildings and property for fire hazards, efficiency of fire protective equipment, adequacy of fire exits and general compliance with fire prevention laws and standards.
  • Advise property owners on the removal of fire hazards and enforce compliance to correct hazards.
  • Receive and investigate complaints regarding fire violations and recommend corrective actions.
  • Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
  • Maintains a variety of records, files and maps related to fire prevention and safety activities and programs.
  • Enter a variety of information into a computer terminal.
  • Conduct inspections for business license compliance.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
