About The Position

The City of Peoria’s Fire Department has an exciting opportunity for a Fire Prevention Inspector. The purpose of this position is to perform skilled work inspecting buildings and facilities for fire hazards and compliance. This can include existing buildings, various facilities, and buildings under construction. This is accomplished by enforcing fire codes, NFPA standards, performing fire inspections, and reviewing plans for code compliance. This is a Fixed-Term (Contract) position that is eligible for benefits. Other duties include conducting fire safety inspections of both new and existing facilities and buildings for conformance with existing codes, investigating fire cause and origin (which includes evidence collection and preservation, detailed report writing, and court testimony as required), investigating citizen complaints involving fire safety or hazardous conditions, reviewing plans for fire/safety construction and fire suppression systems for compliance with applicable codes and standards, preparing inspection reports and entering information into a computerized database, and engaging and maintaining relationships with the public.

Requirements

  • 2 to 4 years of experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent plus additional coursework (up to one year at a Community College or equivalent resulting in accumulating similar knowledge and abilities).
  • Valid Arizona Class "D" Driver’s License
  • International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector I Certification within one (1) year of hire.
  • International Associate of Arson Investigators (IAAI) Arson Investigator Certification I and II within one (1) year of employment.
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities or an acceptable alternative.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct fire safety inspections of both new and existing facilities and buildings for conformance with existing codes.
  • Investigate fire cause and origin, which includes evidence collection and preservation, detailed report writing, and court testimony as required.
  • Investigate citizen complaints involving fire safety or hazardous conditions.
  • Review plans for fire/safety construction and fire suppression systems for compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Prepare inspection reports and enters information into a computerized database.
  • The ability to engage and maintain relationships with the public
  • Research code violations and provides direction and/or technical assistance for correction of identified violations.
