About The Position

The Fire Marshal is responsible for the leadership, coordination, and oversight of fire prevention, fire protection, inspections, and code compliance programs for all BMW manufacturing facility buildings. This position operates on a 40-hour administrative work week (9AM-5PM), with every other Friday Off. The BC/Fire Marshal will have a rotating weekend schedule for on-call issues and emergency calls. This position may also require additional hours for emergency incidents, special training events, filling any open (Shift) Battalion slot when necessary, and departmental needs. This position ensures compliance with applicable fire protection standards including those established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), local jurisdictions, and the South Carolina Fire Academy. The Battalion Chief/Fire Marshal supervises fire prevention personnel, manages inspection programs for fire protection systems and equipment, and serves as the facility’s Fire Marshal authority. The role ensures all buildings, production areas, and support facilities meet applicable fire and life safety codes and standards.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of fire service experience, with at least 5 years in fire prevention, fire protection, or fire marshal functions.
  • 3 years in a supervisory or command-level role (Captain or Battalion Chief equivalent).
  • Experience with fire protection systems inspection and compliance programs.
  • Required certifications must meet applicable standards from the National Fire Protection Association and the South Carolina Fire Academy or equivalent JPRs.
  • Ability to obtain within 12 Months: South Carolina Fire Marshal Certification, NFPA or ICC Fire Inspector I.
  • Ability to obtain within 18 months: NFPA Fire Officer II or higher, Hazardous Material Technician, Incident Command System (ICS) 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800.
  • Extensive knowledge of NFPA codes and fire protection standards.
  • Understanding of industrial fire hazards and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience managing fire protection inspection programs.
  • Ability to interpret building plans, fire protection system layouts, and code requirements.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to coordinate.
  • Meet medical standards outlined in NFPA 1582.
  • Participate and pass an annual medical evaluation.
  • Maintain physical fitness for duty.
  • Participating in a random drug screen program.
  • Work 9am – 5pm (40 hours a week) with every other Friday off.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Fire Protection Engineering, Occupational Safety, Emergency Management, or related field preferred.
  • Experience in industrial, manufacturing, or high-hazard facilities is strongly preferred.
  • Preferred certifications: NFPA or ICC Fire Inspector I, NFPA Fire Officer II.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the facility’s Fire Prevention and Fire Protection Inspection Program across all manufacturing, warehouse, office, and support buildings at Plant 10 in Greer and the Battery Plant in Woodruff.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable NFPA codes, OSHA regulations, BMW DID Rules and Regulations, and state/local fire codes.
  • Serve as the designated Fire Marshal for the facility, responsible for enforcement of fire prevention policies and code compliance.
  • Oversee and coordinate monthly GEMBA fire protection inspections with BMW management, including documentation, reporting, and corrective action tracking.
  • Develop and maintain fire protection procedures, policies, Pre Fire Planning, and inspection protocols.
  • Oversee inspection, testing, and documentation of fire protection systems including: Portable Fire Extinguishers, Hose drops and standpipe systems, Weld plugs / welding area fire protection, Fire sprinkler risers, Fire alarm systems/Pull Stations, Hot Works.
  • Establish Gemba and Pre Fire Plan inspection schedules.
  • Supervise personnel performing inspections.
  • Ensure compliance documentation is completed and maintained daily, weekly and monthly.
  • Track deficiencies and ensuring corrective actions are completed.
  • Cover Shift Battalion Chief Role, as necessary.
  • Assist in supervisory and administrative activities as assigned and/or other duties as assigned within the scope of work for Superior Industrial Fire Service Inc. or BMW.
  • Conduct Fire Marshal inspections of all buildings on the facility property, Plant Spartanburg and Woodruff, to ensure compliance with fire and life safety codes at Plant 10 in Greer and The Battery Plant in Woodruff.
  • Interpret and enforce applicable fire codes and standards.
  • Review building modifications, process changes, and new construction plans for fire protection compliance, in conjunction with BMW PI-420 Fire Specialist.
  • Coordinate with local authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ) during regulatory inspections.
  • Lead incident investigations related to fire hazards or fire protection system failures.
  • Participate in and lead monthly GEMBA walks with manufacturing and plant management as well as, GEMBA walks for BMW Fire Department staff, to evaluate fire protection conditions and safety compliance across operations.
  • Identify fire hazards and recommend corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, energy center, and production teams to implement improvements in fire protection and prevention.
  • Provide leadership guidance on fire protection risk mitigation in manufacturing operations.
  • Supervise fire prevention inspectors and fire protection personnel.
  • Develop work schedules for inspection personnel and coordinate required testing intervals.
  • Maintain inspection databases and compliance records.
  • Prepare daily, weekly, monthly and annual reports on fire protection program performance.
  • Manage fire protection vendor relationships for testing, maintenance, and system service.
  • AOR’s compliance.
  • Support emergency response planning and drills.
  • Lead/coordinate/conduct fire safety training for employees.
  • Participate in emergency incident command when required.
  • Maintain continuous improvement of the facility’s fire protection and prevention program.
