About The Position

The Deputy Fire Marshal supports the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief and the Fire Marshal in managing fire prevention, fire protection systems, life safety inspections, emergency preparedness, and administrative operations within the BMW FD facilities in Spartanburg and Woodruff, South Carolina. This position ensures compliance with Superior Industrial Fire Service SOG’s, BMW KPI’s, applicable fire codes, safety standards, and regulatory requirements including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, and guidelines established by the South Carolina State Fire Marshal’s Office. The Deputy Fire Marshal provides leadership to Fire Technicians, coordinates fire protection system inspections and maintenance, supports emergency response operations, and assists with fire safety training, inspections, and administrative functions necessary to maintain a safe industrial environment. This role requires strong organizational, leadership, and technical knowledge of fire protection systems, fire prevention practices, and emergency response within a large-scale industrial facility.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma (GED)
  • Driver's License
  • Firefighter I & II (NFPA 1001 compliant)
  • Fire Inspector I (NFPA 1031)
  • Hazardous Material Technician
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Training
  • NIMS / ICS Certifications: ICS-100, ICS-200, ICS-700, ICS-800
  • Minimum 5 years of fire service experience, preferably in fire prevention, industrial fire protection, or emergency services.
  • Experience conducting fire inspections and working with fire protection systems.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes including NFPA standards, International Fire Code (IFC), OSHA regulations, and South Carolina fire safety regulations.
  • Understanding fire protection systems including sprinklers, standpipes, valves, extinguishers, and alarm systems.
  • Ability to interpret safety regulations and perform detailed inspections.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with computer systems, inspection reporting software, and spreadsheets.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Ability to lead personnel and coordinate multiple operational tasks.
  • Ability to perform duties in an industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and access elevated areas.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to respond to emergency incidents at any location within the facility.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and operate heavy equipment (up to >200 lbs.).
  • Meet medical standards outlined in NFPA 1582
  • Participate and pass an annual medical evaluation

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine and scheduled fire and life safety inspections throughout the facility in accordance with NFPA standards and site safety policies.
  • Perform monthly inspections of fire protection equipment including portable fire extinguishers, Post Indicator Valves (PIVs), Interior control valves, and Fire protection system components.
  • Coordinate and perform fire extinguisher exchanges and replacements as needed.
  • Map and document newly installed fire protection systems for integration into inspection schedules and records.
  • Conduct fire prevention inspections including building fire safety compliance, hazardous materials storage, Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) compliance, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and Hazardous waste and bulk storage areas.
  • Perform follow-up inspections to verify corrective actions and report ongoing safety concerns to the appropriate department and safety management.
  • Respond to emergencies including fire incidents, medical calls, hazardous conditions, and other facility emergencies.
  • Assist with patient care, scene management, and incident stabilization as required.
  • Support First Aid personnel and emergency response teams as needed.
  • Operate and maintain emergency response vehicles and related equipment.
  • Ensure readiness and operational capability of emergency response equipment.
  • Assist with the maintenance and documentation of fire protection systems.
  • Maintain fire protection system inspection records and documentation.
  • Manage fire protection data using department software including Operative IQ.
  • Maintain spreadsheets and documentation related to fire protection systems across plant facilities.
  • Coordinate with third-party vendors for servicing fire extinguishers and related fire protection equipment.
  • Schedule and oversee annual inspections and maintenance of fire extinguishers and related equipment.
  • Assist with inspection and approval processes for permanent hot work areas in coordination with plant safety personnel, engineering, and risk management teams.
  • Assist shift officers with safety training classes when requested.
  • Deliver fire safety education and training programs including fire extinguisher inspection and use, fire prevention awareness, and emergency preparedness training.
  • Provide support during facility drills and safety exercises.
  • Provide administrative support to Fire Chiefs, Fire Marshal, Training Officer, and fire department personnel.
  • Maintain departmental records and files ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Input and verify fire department operational data and inspection records.
  • Coordinate visitor pre-registration as requested through ELAN Visitor Management System.
  • Assist with scheduling interviews and facility tours for potential new hires.
  • Coordinate onboarding requirements for new personnel including system access and site credentials.
  • Assist with IT-related requests including account access and password resets.
  • Verify personnel scheduling records.
  • Coordinate uniform needs through department vendors.
  • Schedule onboarding and issue protective equipment and gear to new personnel.
  • Coordinate document storage and archival through BMW’s records management system.
  • Schedule document shipments to the BMW storage facility using Access File Bridge.
  • Assist the Program Manager with special projects and departmental initiatives as assigned.
  • Report Weekly and Monthly KPI reports to BMW.
  • Provide supervision and operational guidance to FD shift personnel, as needed.
  • Assist with scheduling, training, and task assignments.
  • Support departmental operational readiness and performance standards.
  • Assist with maintenance and inventory management of emergency equipment.
  • Maintain a professional and positive image when interacting with employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Fire Marshal or Fire Chiefs.
