About The Position

Ensures compliance with Fire Codes, State Laws and County Ordinance that apply to Fire Protection. Works independently on major organizational functions that are executive, professional, technical or affect administration policies organization wide. Has responsibility for all planning of work attainment of assigned objectives with considerable initiative to make major decisions limited only by broad policies or objectives and proceeds along lines of own initiative except when such programs and commitments require investments or expenditures.

Requirements

10-years of field experience in Fire or Emergency Medical Services with progressive supervisory levels achieved.
Must possess Florida State Certification as a Fire Inspector II.
Must possess Florida State Certification as a Fire Investigator; or have ability to obtain within two years of hire.
Must possess Florida State Certification as a Firefighter; or have ability to obtain within one year of hire (Firefighter 2, preferred).
Must possess a valid state of Florida driver’s license.
Must possess current BLS provider card.
Must possess current Emergency Vehicle Operator Certification (EVOC).
Must possess certificate in NIMS I-700, I-800, I-100, I-200.
Must possess certificate in wild land firefighting S-130 and S-190; or have ability to obtain withinone year of hire.
Extensive knowledge of modern principles, methods and equipment for efficient and effective Fire and Emergency Medical Services.
Extensive knowledge of effective methods of planning, training, assigning and directing personnel in regard to public education and fire prevention practices.
Extensive knowledge of the laws, statutes, ordinances, codes, standards, rules and regulations pertaining to fire prevention and investigation and the operation of a Fire Department.
Extensive knowledge of report and record maintenance principles and practices.
Knowledgeable of municipal budgeting and purchasing practices.
Considerable knowledge of effective supervisory principles and techniques.
Skilled in the care and safe operation of a variety of fire emergency service equipment.
Skilled in the operation of motorized vehicles under adverse conditions.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively.
Ability to determine proper courses of action within the established framework of policies and procedures.
Ability to maintain composure under emergency situations.
Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions.
Ability to assist in training subordinate personnel.
Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public.
Considerable knowledge of modern office equipment including computer software programs such as Microsoft Office, Acrobat, and Excel.

Nice To Haves

Code Administrator Preferred.
Fire or EMS Degree preferred (or related field).
Preferred certificates in NIMS I-300 and I-400.
Preferred certificate in All Hazards Incident Management O-305.
Preferred certificates in at least one Hazards Position Specific for Incident Command, Planning Section Chief, Operations Section Chief, & Safety Officer.
Preferred certificate in Division/Group Supervisor E/L 960.
Preferred certificate in wild land firefighting S-330 Strike Team Leader.

Responsibilities

Perform blueprint and building plan review for new construction projects.
Process permits and license applications.
Perform inspections on new construction projects.
Performs annual inspections of business occupancies.
Investigates complaints regarding fire code violations.
Investigates the cause and origin of fires.
Analyzes organizational and community needs, analyzes trends, and reviews statistics.
Communicate with other divisions, departments, and agencies.
Communicates, sends reports to and coordinates with local, state, and federal agencies.
Participates in the formulation of department operating procedures concerning fire prevention, company inspection program and public education.
Assists in maintaining data and records regarding fire inspection or prevention activities and preparing a variety of reports regarding fire inspection or prevention as required.
Assists in the development department budget.
Monitors radio communications, respond and assume a position in the command structure when needed or directed to for fire, medical, hazardous material incidents and other emergency incidents as needed to ensure a positive outcome.
Ensures the department operations conform to local, state, and federal regulations, worker safety and other appropriate rules and regulations.
Reviews and documents subordinate officer’s performance through performance evaluations and conferences.
Facilitates solutions to complex problems facing this organization.
Assists in conducting drills and in-service training classes to help maintain high levels of performance.
Assigns and schedules duties for subordinates.
Ensures equipment and apparatus assigned is properly maintained.
Attends meetings and informs superiors/subordinates of new information, regulations, and procedures.
Serves as a member of various employee committees.
Performs related work as required.
During emergencies, all employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to perform alternate duties.
