About The Position

The City of Bend Fire Department is accepting applications for one (1) regular, full-time Fire Inspector in the Fire Prevention Division of the Fire Department. This is an hourly, non-exempt (overtime eligible) position represented by the Bend Firefighters Association (BFA). The City may use this job posting to create an eligibility list for future hiring purposes. This position performs inspections, code enforcement, fire and life safety education, fire investigation activities, and other community risk reduction functions. Under the general supervision of the Deputy Fire Chief/Fire Marshal and Assistant Fire Marshal, this position implements and supports the City’s fire prevention program.

Requirements

  • Possess a High School diploma or General Educational Development equivalency (GED).
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Meet or exceed minimum health and physical qualifications established by applicable standards.
  • Possess a current Driver’s License and maintain an insurable driving record.
  • Incumbents have typically completed, or are in the process of completing, specialized training in firefighting, fire prevention, and fire investigation.

  • Associate degree in Fire Science, Fire Prevention, or related field
  • ICC Fire Inspector I and II
  • IAAI-FIT Certified NFPA Fire Investigator

  • Bachelor's Degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Public Administration, or related field
  • ICC Fire Plans Examiner
  • DPSST/NFPA Fire Inspector 2
  • NFPA Fire Instructor I
  • DPSST/NFPA Fire & Life Safety Educator
  • NFPA Youth Fire Intervention Specialist
  • Oregon State Fire Marshal Fire Inspector Competency Recognition to Level II.
  • CPR Certification

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections of commercial, industrial, and public occupancy buildings.
  • Interprets and enforces adopted fire codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Provide fire and life safety education to businesses and the public.
  • Investigate fires to determine cause and origin and prepare technical reports.
  • Testify in court.
  • Maintain accurate inspection, investigation, and enforcement records.
  • Assist with emergency response, community risk reduction, and special projects.
