About The Position

The City of Tomball is accepting applications for a Fire Inspector. The role will be responsible for performing routine and proactive commercial building inspections to identify hazards, verify fire protection system compliance, and educate property owners and related stakeholders on locally adopted life-safety codes and ordinances. Fire Inspector functions include but are not limited to the following: Technical Inspections: Conducts field inspections of new commercial, multi-family, and industrial structures to verify alignment with adopted fire codes (e.g., International Fire Code and applicable NFPA Standards). Plan Reviews: Conducts plans review for new construction, alterations and additions. System Testing Verification: Observes and documents acceptance testing for fire alarms, automatic sprinkler systems and other fire protection systems. Hazard Abatement: Identifies fire hazards and unsafe buildings, determines legally enforceable correction timelines, and performs re-inspections. Contribute to the team effort by performing other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of fire code enforcement practices and procedures.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communications.
  • Possess strong problem solving and decision making skills
  • Skill in resolving customer complaints and concerns
  • Proficient in using computers and related hardware and software.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and rational thinking under stressful and/or dangerous circumstances.
  • Ability to evaluate various options and alternatives and choose an appropriate and reasonable course of action.
  • Ability to read and understand applicable ordinances, laws, and regulations affecting all methods, equipment, and materials used.
  • Ability to interpret plans and specifications to detect deviations in applicable fire and life safety codes.
  • Ability to manage time efficiently and effectively.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D equivalent from an accredited educational institution
  • 3-5 years’ experience in fire code compliance, building construction inspection, active fire services or related work experience.
  • ICC Certified Fire Inspector I
  • Texas Class C Driver’s License

Nice To Haves

  • ICC Certified Fire Inspector II
  • ICC Certified Fire Plans Examiner
