About The Position

This position exists to ensure that regulated facilities are constructed and maintained in accordance with requirements in statutes, rules, and adopted codes by reviewing plans, processing documents, inspecting new construction projects, and completing ongoing inspections. The role involves conducting construction site inspections of facilities for code conformance, performing site inspections of building systems, and providing technical assistance to local governments on building, fire, and life safety protection. This is an entry-level position with the expectation of attending trainings and attaining certifications to meet Fire Inspector III qualifications within twenty-four (24) months of hire. Upon meeting these requirements and demonstrating comprehension of DFPC policies, the position is eligible for reallocation to Inspector III.

Requirements

  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience related to plan review or design, building inspection, fire suppression, or construction trade work.
  • Knowledge of architectural/construction terminology and documents including plans, specifications, and other related permit submittal items.
  • Must be a Colorado resident at the time of application.
  • Current valid driver's license at time of hire, and must obtain a Colorado driver's license within 6 months of hire.
  • Requires successful completion of a background investigation that includes a polygraph exam, a fingerprint based criminal history search, reference checking, driving history, drug test and reference checks.

Nice To Haves

  • Current International Code Council (ICC) or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Inspector I certification is strongly preferred and must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
  • Experience applying the provisions of the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code and/or the Facility Guidelines Institute's Guidelines for Design and Construction of Health Care Facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts independent, document-based and/or on-site, inspections of regulated facilities using state and federal regulations.
  • Writes clear, concise, and legally defensible statements of deficiencies based on analysis of documented findings and knowledge of regulation sets, guidelines, Principles of Documentation, and program specific protocols, policies and procedures.
  • Documents and communicates construction and code discrepancies to facility personnel and design professionals and follows up on corrections.
  • Serves as a primary point of contact for the region specified by the Division.
  • Performs onsite inspection to determine if the permitted structure meets the requirements of the applicable codes, including confirming the number of stories, classification of construction type, evaluating means of egress components, fire-resistant rated assemblies, site and building accessibility, and reviewing documentation for subsidiary inspections.
  • Determines scheduling priorities from assigned workload and continually assesses and adjusts schedule to comply with established time frames.
  • Attends required trainings and certification exams to obtain requisite certifications to qualify for promotion to the full performance level inspector III.
  • Performs other work as assigned by the position’s supervisor to meet the mission of the DFPC commensurate with the employee’s knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Inspects facilities for unsafe practices, equipment, and furnishings based on concerns or complaints.
  • Reviews records, policies, and procedures.
  • Interviews staff for appropriate training and knowledge of fire safety procedures.
  • Interviews occupants regarding facility operating conditions and safety issues.
