About The Position

An employee in this class performs regular fire inspections of commercial and retail establishments, schools, and residences as required under State laws and Town ordinances. Considerable public contact requires that the employee exhibit tact and diplomacy in seeking compliance with fire laws, codes, rules and regulations. The employee is subject to hazards associated with fire inspection, administrative, and firefighting work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme cold and hot weather, and exposure to various hazards such as high heat, chemicals, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, and working in high places. Employee is also exposed to atmospheric conditions and blood borne pathogens, may be required to wear a respirator and work in close quarters. Work is performed under the supervision of the Fire Marshal and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and written reports concerning the quality and effectiveness of work performed. This position reports to the Fire Marshal. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Less than 1 year of experience
  • Possess IFSAC/Pro-Board or approved certifications of completion for or have reciprocity documentation for: Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Operations, NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800, Fire Inspector I
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license

Responsibilities

  • Conducts fire inspections of businesses, commercial buildings, schools, day care centers, nursing homes and places of public assembly for existing or potential fire hazards; enforces fire section of state building code and NFPA codes.
  • Schedules and supervises annual fire inspections; conducts follow-up inspections to ensure that deficient conditions are corrected; prepares and submits reports of deficiencies; issues civil penalties for noncompliance when appropriate.
  • Answers questions from private citizens, contractors and builders; researches manuals and code books for solutions and responses to violations; responds to complaints.
  • Conducts fire prevention education programs, lectures and demonstrations upon request.
  • Maintains accurate inspection records; enters inspection information in computer.
  • Reviews construction plans for new buildings and performs code compliance inspections during the construction process as needed to assist the Town Fire Marshal.
  • Performs the duties of a firefighter on major fire calls when directed to respond
  • Performs related duties as required.
