About The Position

This is a full-time position for a Fire Inspector I or II within the Community Risk Reduction Division. The Fire Inspector I is a developmental-level role performing routine fire and life-safety inspections, code-compliance activities, public education, and records management, while assisting with plan review and fire investigations. Work is performed with increasing independence as proficiency develops. Complex assignments are completed under guidance. The Fire Inspector II is an advanced technical role that independently performs complex fire and life-safety inspections, plan reviews, code-enforcement activities, fire protection system inspections, fire investigations, and assigned Community Risk Reduction programs. This role serves as a technical resource and mentor, referring significant enforcement actions to the Deputy Fire Marshal or Fire Marshal.

Requirements

• Graduation from high school or equivalent.
• Fire Inspector I: One year of education, specialized training, or experience in fire prevention, fire inspection, code enforcement, the fire service, construction, building safety, public safety, or a closely related field. OR An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Fire Inspector II: Three years of progressively responsible experience in fire prevention, fire inspection, code enforcement, plan review, fire investigation, or closely related activities. Qualifying experience may be obtained through service as a Fire Inspector I or through equivalent external experience. OR An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Must possess a valid Utah Driver License.
• Fire Inspector I: Must possess Fire Inspector I certification through IFSAC/Pro Board, the International Code Council, or the Utah Fire and Rescue Academy at the time of appointment or obtain it within 12 months.
• Fire Inspector I: Must possess Fire Investigator I certification through the Utah Fire and Rescue Academy, IFSAC/Pro Board, or an approved equivalent at appointment or obtain it within 18 months.
• Fire Inspector I: Must complete NIMS/ICS courses IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800 within 6 months of appointment.
• Must maintain required certifications and continuing education.
• Fire Inspector II: Must possess Fire Inspector I certification through IFSAC/Pro Board, the International Code Council, or the Utah Fire and Rescue Academy.
• Fire Inspector II: Must possess Fire Inspector II certification through IFSAC/Pro Board or the International Code Council.
• Fire Inspector II: Must possess Fire Investigator I certification through the Utah Fire and Rescue Academy, IFSAC/Pro Board, or an approved equivalent at appointment or obtain it within 18 months.
• Fire Inspector II: Must possess Fire Plans Examiner certification through NFPA, ICC, or IFSAC/Pro Board, or obtain it within 18 months of appointment.
• Fire Inspector II: Completed NIMS/ICS courses IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800.

Nice To Haves

• Currently or previously certified as a Utah Firefighter I or IFSAC/Pro Board equivalent.
• Currently or previously certified as a Utah Firefighter II or IFSAC/Pro Board equivalent.
• Currently or previously certified at the Hazardous Materials Awareness and/or Operations level.
• Experience with fire protection systems, construction documents, code enforcement, public education, or fire-department records systems.
• Fire Inspector II: Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator through NAFI or Certified Fire Investigator through IAAI.
• Fire Inspector II: ATC-20/21 or equivalent post-disaster building-safety training.
• Fire Inspector II: Youth fire setter intervention certification or related training.
