About The Position

The City of Golden Valley is accepting applications to fill a single vacant position in our Fire Department. This position will be filled with either a Fire Inspector I or a Fire Inspector II, depending on the experience and qualifications of the selected applicant. Fire Inspector I Position Overview: This position administers and enforces adopted state and city codes within the City of Golden Valley under the supervision of the Assistant Chief of Prevention. Individuals in this position will also assume Firefighter responsibilities while on duty. Fire Inspector II Position Overview: This position is responsible for administration and enforcement of adopted state and city codes within the City of Golden Valley and leads fire investigations under the supervision of the Assistant Chief of Prevention. Fire Inspector II may provide work directions to Paid on-Call Firefighters assisting with inspections and on the fire grounds.

Requirements

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Ability to respond to calls as a Golden Valley Firefighter, which includes the following Minnesota State Certifications: Firefighter II, Hazmat Materials – Operations Level (or eligibility to obtain within 6 months of employment), Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) (or eligibility to obtain within 6 months of employment), Fire Apparatus Operator Pumper or Aerial (or eligibility to obtain within 6 months of employment).
Ability to perform code enforcement and Fire Inspector I duties, which include the following Minnesota State Certifications: Blue Card Command & Control (or eligibility to obtain within 6 months of employment), Fire Inspector I.
Minimum of 2 years of firefighting experience (for Fire Inspector I).
Valid Class D Driver’s License.
Eligibility to obtain Minnesota firefighter licensure within six months of employment.
Eligibility to complete the essential duties and responsibilities of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Associate's degree in fire science, fire service management, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience (for Fire Inspector II).
Ability to perform code enforcement and Fire Inspector II duties, which include the following Minnesota State Certifications: Blue Card Command & Control, Fire Inspector II (NFPA 1031), Fire Investigator (NFPA 1033), Fire Instructor I (NFPA 1041) (for Fire Inspector II).
Three years of reasonable accommodations of documented experience applying and enforcing Minnesota State Codes and Local Codes (for Fire Inspector II).
Valid Minnesota Class D Driver’s License with a good driving record (for Fire Inspector II).

Nice To Haves

Associate’s degree or coursework/vocational training in building inspections or fire science or related field (for Fire Inspector I).
Minnesota State Certification in Fire Inspector II (for Fire Inspector I).
Code enforcement experience in the public sector, or municipal planning/inspections (for Fire Inspector I).
Experience in testing and inspecting fire protection systems (fire alarm, fire sprinkler, other agents), complaint inspections, business inspections, and property maintenance code enforcement (for Fire Inspector I).
Bachelor’s degree in fire science, fire administration, public administration, public safety administration, or related field (for Fire Inspector II).
Minnesota State Firefighter Certifications: Plans Examiner I (NFPA 1031), Fire Instructor II (NFPA 1041), Fire Officer I (NFPA 1021) (for Fire Inspector II).
1 year of documented experience conducting plan review (for Fire Inspector II).
Experience in testing and inspecting fire protection systems (fire alarm, fire sprinkler, other agents), complaint inspections, business inspections, and property maintenance code enforcement (for Fire Inspector II).
Coursework or experience in fire protection system design/installation (for Fire Inspector II).
Code enforcement experience in the public sector, or municipal planning/inspections (for Fire Inspector II).

Responsibilities

Fulfill responsibilities of a Golden Valley Firefighter, responding to all calls for service while on duty (including fire, medical, and rescue calls).
Monitor and inspect existing residential rental properties, residential care facilities, and commercial properties for compliance with applicable state and city codes.
Develop and maintain strong relationships with building managers and owners.
Investigate reports of code violations, issue citations, resolve disputes, and conduct follow-up inspections to ensure compliance with written correction orders.
Participate in legal proceedings, including producing documents/evidence for prosecution of code violations.
Assist with and may lead fire prevention initiatives, education, and outreach.
Stay abreast of updated inspection practices and code changes and make recommendations on department procedures.
Educate homeowners, business owners, and community members on fire and property maintenance codes and related ordinances, policies, and procedures.
Maintain a variety of inspection and enforcement logs and records, including recommendations of code modifications.
Assist with fire investigations.
Assist other City departments with additional code compliance, training activities, and inspection activities.
Lead fire prevention initiatives and efforts through education and enforcement.
Conduct inspections of both existing and new construction residential and commercial properties for compliance with applicable state and city codes.
Provide information and guidance to contractors and owners on code requirements and compliance procedures.
Lead and document fire investigations to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
Conduct construction and fire protection system plan review for construction projects to ensure compliance with State and City codes, statutes, and ordinances.
Monitor and inspect construction sites for code compliance throughout the project.
