About The Position

Under general supervision, maintain and repair light, medium, and heavy Fire Department vehicles and equipment. This role involves performing routine maintenance, repairs, and rebuilding of heavy equipment, diagnosing and repairing complex components, conducting safety checks, and preparing reports. It also includes responding to on-call emergency service requests and performing related duties as required.

Requirements

High School Diploma, GED, or higher
Two (2) years of experience in heavy/diesel equipment maintenance and repair; OR graduation from a heavy/diesel equipment maintenance and repair program from an accredited college or university; OR one (1) year of work experience in the maintenance and repair of medium and heavy emergency response vehicles with two (2) Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications in fire apparatus or ambulances.
Valid Texas Class “B” Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or equivalent from another state within six (6) months of appointment.
Obtain and maintain at least two (2) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Medium/Heavy Vehicle Certifications [T1-T8] as specified in ASE's Certification Test Series within six (6) months of appointment.
Texas State Vehicle Inspector License Certification within six (6) months of appointment.
Obtain and maintain an Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) F-1 certification (Maintenance, Inspection, and Testing of Fire Apparatus) or an E-0 EVT certification (Maintenance, Inspection, and Testing of Ambulances) within one (1) year of appointment.
Positions requiring a CDL or positions that are safety-sensitive are subject to drug and alcohol testing following federal regulations.

Responsibilities

Maintain, repair, and recondition emergency response vehicles and equipment, with gasoline, diesel, or alternative fuel internal combustion engines.
Perform routine maintenance, repairs, and rebuilding of heavy equipment following work order instructions, disassemble units, measure parts for wear, inspect parts for damage, analyze and determine necessary corrective measures, replace worn or damaged parts, and reassemble units following technical manuals, diagrams, and instructions.
Diagnose and repair complex components, including hydraulic systems, electronic actuators, valves, and wiring on heavy trucks.
Perform regularly scheduled, emergency repair, and/or preventative maintenance work.
Disassemble and overhaul systems and components, air-conditioning units, engines and transmissions, hydraulic and other power-operated units, and test overhauled equipment to ensure proper operation.
Determine the need and extent of repair and service to vehicles by road test, and use of diagnostic devices; visually inspect equipment for excessive wear, damage, and safety of operation, or question drivers about performance problems, and report defects, malfunctions, and unsafe conditions to supervisor.
Test, adjust, and repair emissions and electrical systems, including batteries, alternators, wire harnesses, lights, computerized ignition systems, and related electrical units.
Fabricate, modify, and repair assemblies and equipment components using approved cutting and welding techniques.
Conduct safety checks on all equipment.
Inspect and test completed work to ensure repairs were performed according to standards.
Prepare reports and maintain records of work activities.
Respond to on-call emergency service requests, determining the nature and cause of equipment malfunctions or breakdowns in the field, making necessary adjustments, replacements, or repairs to maintain equipment operation or prepare vehicles for towing.
Perform duties of immediate supervisor or coworkers as necessary to ensure continuity of operations during absences.
Maintain the cleanliness of the work area and tools.
