About The Position

The Detroit Fire Department - Communications Division is seeking a Fire Dispatcher to join their team. The mission of this division is to provide citizens with world-class fire department communications, dispatching appropriate resources for the protection of life and property during fire, medical, and rescue emergencies. The Communications Center operates 24/7, with highly trained and licensed Public Safety Emergency Medical Technicians and Medical First Responders serving as Fire/EMS Dispatchers, handling emergency calls and dispatching Fire & EMS Responders.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One year of responsible work experience in emergency dispatching and/or performing other work in an emergency response capacity.
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Valid State of Michigan Driver License required.
  • Must pass the National Registry Exam for Medical First Responder Licensure.
  • Must be able to maintain certifications.
  • Knowledge of office work, terms and equipment.
  • Knowledge of Detroit Streets and other City Locations.
  • Skill in utilizing keyboarding devices, data, and voice communication devices.
  • Skill in the use of Smartsheets.
  • Skill in multitasking.
  • Ability to write legibly.
  • Ability to speak in a clear and distinct voice.
  • Ability to enter information using a keyboard, speak, and listen simultaneously.
  • Ability to accurately transcribe brief written and verbal radio communication.
  • Ability to gather information related to medical or fire emergencies.
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to accept responsibility and to work any assigned shift and overtime when required.
  • Ability to interact effectively with co-workers.
  • Ability to work various shifts including Days, Afternoons & Midnights.
  • Ability to learn public safety emergency codes and priorities.
  • Ability to work in an emergency response environment.
  • Required to have a hearing test at a City authorized medical facility.
  • Ability to perform multiple functions simultaneously which includes reading and writing standard English text and to effectively orally communicate in stressful situations in the English language as well as to repeat the exact emergency message received.

Nice To Haves

  • Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) Certification is preferred.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification is preferred.
  • CPR Certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Dispatches emergency response vehicles to calls for service.
  • Initiates requests for assistance from other agencies for emergency scene situations.
  • Relays information to appropriate field supervisors and management personnel.
  • Notifies hospitals of emergency transports to their facilities.
  • Makes telephone notifications of major emergency situations.
  • Engages in routine contacts with other divisions or sections of the department.
  • Routes medical units' calls directly into hospital emergency rooms.
  • Maintains log sheets.
  • Operates standard office equipment.
  • Receives and processes calls from employees of the department calling off duty.
  • Enters emergency responses into the system.
  • Checks on prior calls for service when requested.
