Requirements

Ability to work 12-hour shifts and non-standard schedules, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Knowledge of emergency dispatching procedures and trunked radio systems.
Knowledge of the streets, districts, and commercial and industrial areas of the City of Regina and surrounding areas, or strong map-reading skills.
Ability to cooperate and communicate effectively with the public, Fire Department personnel, and other emergency and support agencies.
Ability to operate computers, telephones, radios, and communication equipment in an environment where accuracy and attention to detail are essential.
Ability to assess information calmly and make sound judgments in time-sensitive, stressful situations.
Ability to work with sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
Ability to follow established standards and procedures adopted by the Regina Fire Department.
Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment and maintain positive working relationships.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Sufficient manual dexterity to operate communications and office equipment.
General knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety legislation.
Successful candidates will be required to provide a satisfactory criminal record check in accordance with the City of Regina's Criminal Record Check Policy.
Proof of education is required.
Additional assessments may be conducted to evaluate competencies, skills, and knowledge.
Successful candidates may be required to meet hearing standards appropriate for emergency communications roles.

Nice To Haves

Recognized public safety certifications, such as APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator certification, are considered an asset.

Responsibilities

Answer and evaluate calls requiring Fire services, taking emergency information from, at times, extremely distraught callers, and dispatch appropriate firefighting or emergency units using the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System, fire alerting system, and a trunked radio system; manually dispatch services in the event of a system failure.
Gather all pertinent details, assess situations for the safety of victims and fire personnel, and accurately enter call data into CAD.
Liaise with firefighters throughout incidents, process required tasks, and ensure accurate records and statistics are maintained.
Maintain effective working relationships with other emergency response agencies, City departments and community partners.
Monitor radio traffic and proactively provide assistance or information to Fire Department personnel.
Record and transmit information to fire stations such as road closures, hydrant shut-offs, and other operational updates received from City departments or partner agencies.
Assist in training less experienced personnel and new employees.
Test communication equipment daily from the Communications Centre and report malfunctions to the Assistant Chief of Technical & Administrative Services, the on duty Assistant Chief and oncoming shift.
Answer telephone calls and interact with the public in a professional and courteous manner.
Maintain up-to-date status records for firefighting apparatus and department vehicles.
Maintain radio contact with Incident Commander during emergencies; perform assignments as requested and ensure pertinent information is entered into record-keeping systems.
Perform duties in accordance with departmental policies, procedures, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Perform general maintenance duties within the Fire Communications Centre, including cleaning work areas and reporting minor repairs.
Comply with all requirements of the Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and the City of Regina Occupational Health and Safety Manual.
Perform related duties as required.
