About The Position

Anaheim Fire & Rescue provides emergency medical services and fire protection to residents and visitors of the City of Anaheim. We are recruiting individuals to join us in our mission to ensure the safety and welfare of the public we serve through the services we provide. As a Fire Cadet, you will demonstrate the values of the organization, provide a high level of customer service, and perform a variety of routine fire service functions for Anaheim Fire & Rescue. This is a work training program which provides hands-on experience for college students who are preparing for a career in the fire service. The Fire Cadet will work to support non-suppression operations in Administration, Community Risk Reduction, Support Services, Operations, and Community Engagement. Candidates must have graduated from high school or obtained the G.E.D. and maintain enrollment with a minimum of six (6) semester units at an accredited college or university and maintain a minimum of a 2.5 grade point average. Prior experience (volunteer or paid) with a fire service is desired. This is a part-time position usually averaging 20 hours per week. A minimum number of hours is not guaranteed. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Employees in this class are participating in an on-the-job training program in which incumbents will learn to perform Fire Services and para-technical duties in accordance with established procedures. Assignments may be made within any division of the department. Incumbents will progress through various assignments and specific coursework enabling them to choose among various Fire Service career options. Initially, employees will work under close supervision. As knowledge is acquired of procedures applicable to assigned work, incumbents will be expected to perform routine duties with greater independence.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Must be enrolled in a minimum of six (6) semester units at an accredited college or university and maintain a minimum of a 2.5 grade point average.
  • Minimum age of 18 years old required.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License by date of appointment.
  • Knowledge of standard office procedures, typing skills, and basic computer skills.
  • Knowledge of basic principles and procedures of filing and record keeping.
  • Knowledge of customer service.
  • Knowledge of writing and basic report preparation.
  • Knowledge of English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of Fire Services.
  • Knowledge of general fire processes.
  • Knowledge of applicable fire codes.
  • Ability to perform a variety of basic Fire Service functions.
  • Ability to write clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain assigned equipment and/or vehicles.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, outside agencies and the general public.
  • Ability to deal diplomatically with the public under stressful situations at all times.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with various administrative assignments to include answering phones; receiving the public; performing clerical functions such as copying, filing and general office work; any other reasonable task that supervisors might assign.
  • Assist with fire prevention inspections; environmental projects; and public education presentations.
  • Assist with ordering equipment and supplies; deliver mail, packages, equipment and supplies to various locations.
  • Assist with facility and equipment maintenance, assist with program management/coordination (i.e. Fire Intern Program).
  • Utilize city internal computer system to enter and retrieve data from computer; type and file documents; vehicle shuttling and other errands.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
